My antenna from the ground to the base of the antenna is 32 feet. That puts my antenna itself in or at the 36 feet wave length. I have heard a lot about this subject with a lot of different answers. MY QUESTION IS---SHOULD THE BASE OF THE ANTENNA BE AT 36 feet OR IS THE 36 feet END AT THE TOP OF THE ANTENNA? TECH 808 WHAT DO YOU THINK? |

This is like asking "how long is a piece of string".
Are you looking at local or dx contacts.
Usually it is taken as at the base of the antenna, although a little either way would not make too much difference.

Thanks 237, I have seen a few inches to a few feet make a big difference on locals. I can not tell on dx. I have two antennas on a ridge. I would like one to be for locals and the other for dx. What would be good for the dx? Thanks for your help. |

For the lowest takeoff angle, mount a gain antenna with the feedpoint at some 1/2 wave multiple above ground. Much better if you have radials in the ground too.
Keep in mind, on an Antron 99 or Imax 2000, the feedpoint is around the top of the aluminum mounting tube where the fiberglass meets it.

what frequency? good soil conductivity? Type of vertical (1/4 wave ground plane, 1/2. 5/8, J-Pole). Are you looking to talk local, DX or a little of both?

Hi Joey,I have the i-max for local and the a-99 I want to use for dx. The freq is in and around the 11 meters range. both antennas are located on top of a mountain ridge and I do not think the soil conducts very well except in spring and winter when it is mostly wet conditions. I have an 8 foot ground rod at both antennas and the same grounding system at the shack connected to the shield. Tech 833 gave some advice I have not tried yet but, I will. Joey I will take any advice that will improve my ability to talk local or dx. Thanks for the reply fellows. |
