Just something I have noticed over the last couple of years. Most ham ops have a tendency 2 be stuck up and condesending even in there own ranks. I know most have a high degree of edumacation and the like but I dont think that makes them anything special. I have 2 years of electronics tech speak 2 languages have been around the world. but I dont treat others as if they are lower than me because of this. My grandfather is a ham and he doesnt act this way. I have thought many times about getting my ticket but then I read an article posted by some snooty stuck up person with a call sign and it changes my mind. yeah CB is crowded but at least most of the poeple you meet and talk 2 are willing 2 help and talk no matter what backround you or they have and they do it without an attitude. Just my 2 cents.

I will have been a ham 4 years come the 27th of this month.
Now you know only part of what you posted is true.
This topic has been gone thru the washer so many times it's not fun to read it anymore but I will say this:
No matter what walks of life you are going to run into an A** every now and then.
With that said I have run into some both on the CB and Ham bands.
Don't let one or two bad apples spoil the bunch, pick off a new tree (Go to other bands and/or Freq's)and on the ham bands you are not stuck to just 40 AM/SSB channels.
Now you said your Grandfather is a ham (How long?)
If a long time am sure he be telling you the same thing as I.
Now the ones you say stay in their own ranks: Well that may be true but they study hard for those General or Extra areas to use.
Now for those stuck ups: I have been hearing some bad mouths late at night on the 75/80 meter band and I don't see how they still have a license.
So I ask if you really want to become a ham then you do it for you and no one else and don't let the bad apples scare you away from it.
If your Grandfather is still alive and has his ham radio going spend some time with him around the ham radio and you will learn after murder, rape, kidnapping etc this is still a nice plant. God Bless and 73.

If you don't like what goes on in the Ham world, you can change it. You become one and not act like the others. A lot of the Copper forum members are Hams. Mainly the one's that do the most posting. Do they act like the bad apples you speak of? NO!!! I became a Ham because of the many Hams I met here on the forum. Try it! If you don't like it you don't have to talk on the ham bands. You can always act like your grandad. Or some of the others. It's your choice! Don't judge the whole world because of the actions of a few.

Am I a CBer?

Am I a Licensed Ham Operator?

I am BOTH!

Do I enjoy talking / chatting with my CB friends on the CB Band? Yes

Do I enjoy talking / chatting with my HAM friend's on the Ham frequencies? Yes

It is true that some Ham's do appear to be stuck up and some CBer's also? YES sad to say.

But the 1 thing they BOTH have in common is it that they BOTH enjoy the Radio hobby and what it has to offer.

Being a Licensed Ham operator give's a person MORE: Band's / Frequencies / Mode's of operation to chat / talk with people from around the world.

A lot of people who use / enjoy being a CBer do not realize the Option's / Mode's / Frequencies of operation that a licensed ham can enjoy using.

I have been in the radio hobby since the early 60's.

Do I know everything about the Radio hobby? NO!

Am I still learning? YES!

Do I talk to / chat with other's who are a CBer and/or a Ham? YES

Just because other's may not share my interest in the Radio Hobby, Does NOT make them a bad person.

The Radio Hobby has a LOT to offer but it is up to YOU to decide what part of it that you want to use / explore.

I have found the opposite to be true.

I am a licensed ham, as well as GROL and former 1st class Radiotelephone w/radar endorsement.

I have been told by CBers, including some here, that I do not fit in and have been made to feel very uncomfortable and unwanted by a few members of the CB crowd.

So, you see, it is unfair to pour a blanket statement like that over an entire community. Hams are not 'stuck up' any more than CBers are as a group. You will always find individuals in ANY group that come off snooty.

Ditto Tech-833.

As a Ham, a CBer and a holder of an INternational Maritime Radio Licence I have found the same at times.

Do I let it worry me - heck no!

I am happy to talk to anyone, any band and any mode.

There was a place at the southern tip of Merritt Island, Fla where you could park near the water and send a really good signal. Some guys even threw ground anchors, chains and cables into the water to ground their vehicles when running linears... the wars on CB were pretty rank in those day- every watt helped.
One night, well after becoming a ham, I pulled up to that spot to take advantage of a 2M band opening. The CBers walked over to start a fight and started yelling insults and threats... I had no idea why, I hadnt been there in years.

The reason, it turned out, was local near-elderly self-styled FCC enforcement wanabee hams were showing up nightly pointing fingers, taking pictures, writing down tags, calling the police (whom were getting sick of the stupid calls) and generally harrassing the CBers.

Once I calmed everyone down and let them know my attitude toward CB and why I was there we got along fine.

The point is- there's some history there and the reasons for the prejudice arent personal. Let it go and make yourself known as an individual.

One thing to keep in mind. You can keep your granddads call active after he is gone. You can not without a ham ticket.

I share the thoughts of the other members. I got started in radio 1st on CB like a lot do. I was on one of the guard bands one day and I hear this voice that had to be local. He invited me over for coffee and I listened in on a different world of radio. Yea, some sounded snooty, but most talked about the latest antenna they'd built or the radio they converted, or having found some piece of great equipment for a basement price.

This new friend had me listen to several bands on the HF radio, one more interesting than the next. Then we went to VHF and UHF and I listened as he explained that these people I could meet in person and have coffee with because most were real close by, and he showed me the ones that he (new to the area) didn't get along with. He showed me that even among the educated in radio there are rectums, this made me feel better because I'd met more than my share on CB.

I did get my ticket and met many very nice folks on HAM. One of the guys I met was a USAF Colonel who flew a couple of Shuttle missions. Could have been a snoot but was a great guy. We shared many hours talking about radio, space travel, theory, and just about anything.

Point is, don't count us all out! And try to keep in mind that we're all human and thereby subject to moods, good or bad.

What I have found over here in the UK is that if you are a serious CB/radio enthusiast not a foul mouthed channel troll (as many are here) most licensed Hams are more than happy to chat and guide you in the correct direction towards your first Ham licence (UK foundation ticket) even to the point of supervised training on their personal equipment, treat a person with respect and 99% of the time you will get respect and understanding back.
In saying that there are still some older Hams a little anoyed about how easy it is to obtain a licence these days with very little study time and only an appreciation of morse test.

It is true. I have quiet HF ham side in the past because of folks who thought they owned certain bands are talked down to you as stated above. CB has some folks like that too, but I'm not dropping out. I love working dx and also the buildind/experimenting side of the hobby.

Those folks that are condesending are not so educated as they are trying to convince themselves and others that they are special. It doesn't take that much to get an extra class ham license now. I have one but that doesn't make me better or smarter than a general. Smart is more than a title or license. Smart really has to do with class. An intelligent person doesn't have to flaunt their knowledge nor put others down to lift themselves up. We have a guy close to here that thinks he is king dong on the 75 meter Mississippi net. He actually has some of the younger hams convinced that he is the be all end all to radio practice and radio knowledge. When he interupts they just let him and bow to him. Sometimes I want to key up and tell him to wait his turn like everyone else and ask him who made you king of the hill? But, the inferior minded hams might take his side and I might be disinvited from the Mississippi net. You've got these people in all walks of life. And I'm like you, Philuk, I don't like it and never will like it. That's why I still have an attachment to cb sideband. It's just a little lighter hearted than ham dxing. I do them both. But you hit on a pet peeve of mine. The air waves would be better off without them.
