I have read some articles on coax shielding and they say that the shielding like that which is used on the ca 400, in time will oxidize and cause problems in the connection of the PL plug to the shield. The reason they gave for this was the connection was not air tight. Can any of the techs out there shine some light on this subject? |

It happens on ALL Coax, no matter what type or percentage of shielding. Yes overtime, even hard line suffers from it, and this is why it pays to check your coax regularly. After all what is good enough for a commercial concern to do, should be good enough for a "Lowly" CBer or ham..
One of the things I do ( and this will be explained in the article on shack set up I am working on) is to take measurements (SWR, Line loss and even DC resistance) of any new coax run I install. Once a year, or more often if I suspect issues, I compare current values to those originally recorded. Any significant change is a pretty good indicator of issues.
