I've got 2 Galaxie radios that I switch around in my jeep. A 99 and a 959. I really like them because they look great and work great except when I go Jeeping. Almost every trip results in the radio needing to be repaired. The 99 is worse but the 959 has problems too. Usually I need to resolder something in it after a trip.

I hate to lose the audio, recieve and SSB that these radios have but I'm fed up with them.

I have a Cobra 29 that I bought new in 1994. Would the 29 stand up to off roading better than the Galaxie's? Whats your recomendation?

I have heard the same thing about galaxy radio's.Cool But not all that tough..I used 29Ltd and 25 LTD for 10 ++ years in our 4x4 and Log trucks and had very little problems. Most problems are from the mic cord swinging back and forth all day.
If you don't need SSB the 29LTD is a good one.If you do try to find and Older 148gtl that hasn't been torn up with mods. There pretty tough too

As an experienced off roader, and electronics tech, let me say just this-

For off-roading electronics, surface mount is your best friend. Try to find a radio that uses surface mount components rather than the traditional thru-hole type. In my Jeep, I use a walkie-talkie connected to power and roof mounted antenna because the WT has all surface mount components. It has survived almost 8 years worth of off-road trips without any damage (except for some scratches).

What radios are surface mount? I don't really know what that means.

(SMT) = Surface Mount Technology

The Ranger 2950 & 2970DX both use SMT Technology
as well as many other model's / brand's of radio's.

SMT gives the owner much less chance of anything shaking loose.

You will find SMT technology used in many different radio's as well as most all HT's.

I had a lot of issues with having to resolder different spots in my Galaxy 88. I just got fed up and went completely thru it and re-soldered every spot I could. I haven't had an issue since. Granted I have only had it in my Ranger, my 4x4 F150, and my 85 Cutlass Supreme, and none of these ever really saw off-road. I haven't put it or my Galaxy 44 in my 78 CJ5 just because they are too big and were to expensive to put in a vehicle with no locks.

for off roading the uniden 510 is great very light and if someone does steal it its cheap to replace. id use that in a cigerate lighter while off roading .then when in normal driving mount the galaxy back up.its a little more work but its less hassle then resoldering them
