What is a good, inexpensive beam antenna to use?
I am using a SS3900GHP as a base and would love to get back into talking "skip". |

Maco 3 element or the sirio 3 element set horizontal IMO. I use the maco 3 set flat and do fairly well for DX whether it be on AM or SSB.

Yes. My opinion is, the Maco Y-Quad is not a quad. It is a 2 element yagi that happens to use a quad style reflector. But, it is still a yagi. Until you add a director to a yagi, it is a little disappointing.
The Y-Quad is for those who don't have a lot of room for a 3-element or larger antenna and want dual polarity.

This may seem like a dumb question, but...
The M103C lays flat right?
Can I/should I stick a veritcal antenna on top of it as well? Pros/Cons, etc.

you can set it flat or vertical. For DX, putting them flat works really well. you can mount a vertical antenna above them also so u have the vert for local and the 3's for DX.

you asked about the Y quad yes it's a yagi with a quad reflector but it's a solid performer. i have used both the 4 element shooting star dual polarity and the Y quad 2 element and saw no major difference between the two. to me the trouble with making the change sure was not worth it. ground wave yes the shootingstar 4 element did a little better but nothing to say dang about. but in dxing when conditions are good the Y quad will performe the same in the compact package and the great thing about the Y quad is the fact it's dual polarity.there is a lot of guys running gound planes that a beam on vertical can reach out a little farthur and touch. Y quads a great choise if you want dual polarity in a small package. |

No. The PDL-2 is a quad. The Y-Quad is a yagi with a quad reflector. A true quad will have a little more gain than an equivelent yagi.

Y-Quad stands for Yagi-Quad. Yagi driven element, quad reflector.
