I looked though this site for a humor topic to post this, but alas will just post this here for your reading entertainment. This week I was monitoring one of our local channels and heard some who calls themselves a "radio technician" telling talking to one of the new local operators. The "new" operator was asking about antenna height and how high he should put his antenna. The "radio tech" as he like to call himself told the new operator "if you put your antenna too high, your signal will just go over people who have their antenna lower." I paused in what I was doing and turned towards the radio awaiting the punch line to this statement, but it never came and he continued to inform this man that his signal would "shoot" right over lower antenna stations. Well I reached for the microphone to enter into this morbid conversation and question why he would tell someone this when another bird dogger keyed up and stated "that was the biggest load of crapola he had heard in his entire life on the radio'. Well the verbal battle started. The responder eventually keyed up and stated that he was an amateur extra and he could assure him that his information was incorrect. I eventually keyed in and concured with the amateur extra. Since that day I have monitored the station inquestion and have repeatedly heard this "radio tech" telling new upcoming operators some of the most bizzare things I believe that I have ever heard come from somone claiming to be a "radio tech". Stating that he can produce 400 watts out of a Texas Star 250 to other various tall tales of magic. I am so very glad that on this site we have actual radio technicians that share their knowledge that is of the true nature and makes sense. I wonder if this gentleman that claims the title of "radio tech" believes that all that it takes to be one is a sodering iron and a place to plug it in.

But, if he plugs his soldering iron in to an electrical socket that is below room tempurature, does that mean all of his solder joints will be "cold"?

Job well done, OM! Keep up the good work.

It never ceases to amaze me what some people will come up with. Like you, I'd have waited for teh punch line too.

As much as I hate to say it, it this sort of thing that makes it hard for those of us who are qualified, trained and experienced to honestly help people over the air.

I, for one am grateful to Copper for the chance tobe able to pass on what5 I have learnt over the years.

OH MY GAWD That is about one of the funniest things I have heard in a long time!! I will pass that one on to my electrical engineers here at work they will like that!!

You guys are right there are so many people out there that are so called and self proclaimed "experts". They are experts, experts of inaccuracies, "fish stories" and general BS and talk to feel their head rattle. I always know where to get my Correct Radio related Information and help and it's right here at Coppers Web site!

Hey guys;

I think I must have heard the same statement at least a dozen times about, "Hey bubba; iffen you put dat dare tenner too high, you jest gonna be gum bumpin wit da moon. Can't be overshootin now! 10-4 ?"

One of my all time favorites is the "Tec" that screwdrivers till the radio backward swings, then shows a forward swing on a real generous peak meter.

There was a guy that used to come over and grab things off my work bench saying,"Hey, what's this?"

Well, I was building a noise filter one day had just tested it and unplugged from the wall. I was about to short it when guess who dropped by. Now I am not a bad person, but I thought I was going to die from laughter. You probably know, "The rest of the story". He let go of that thing so guick I thought it was going to defy gravity. He grabbed himself and vibrated to the bathroom, seems he'd had coffee before he came over.

If he ever picked anything up again I never saw. From there on he'd ask and not touch, you couldn't even hand him anything.

I heard one about a week ago, went like this.

Someone asked this guy, where does skip conditions come from?

He replied, "from thunder storms"

It is free entertainment.

HOW ABOUT THIS, IF YOU TURN YOUR ANTENNA UP-SIDE DOWN YOU CAN LET THE SKIP RUN OUT. OR IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE SKIP GET SOME SKIP GREASE TO PUT ON YOUR ANTENNA SO THE SKIP CAN SLIDE ON BY.

I remember in the 70's, a guy that was selling 102" whips with a "pure silver" tip on them. He claimed, and many other 'experts' backed up his claims, that the silver at the tip caused the RF (when transmitting) to jump off the antenna with great vigor.

I guess that when I turn on my car radio and am listening to music that is coming from a very tall antenna it's just my imagination?
