Not looking at useing the pre-amp but was wondering about durability The 203p has 4 RM3 and the 200 has 1 SD 1446 What amp would be better for AM ? SSB ? What amp runs cooler etc

I’ve owned both units and with a 3 watt dead key driving them they both get a bit worm with just 15mins of talk time @ 80degs room temperature. The pre-amps went bad on both units due to static electricity coming down the antenna as the wind starts kicking up. Before the pre-amps went bad I heard a snapping cracking sound like what a stun gun would make when activated coming from inside the amps. I have everything grounded but it seems both units have little or no static bleed off when using them in a base station operation.
I would only recommend using these amps on AM and FM because I tried using them on SSB and they both report sounding kina raspy and distorted, even when running them with a maximum of 10 to 12 watts pep input.
They both sound acceptable on AM and FM. I have the KL 200P with the 1 SD-1446 currently running with a Uniden Washington base @ a 3 watt rms and 12 watt pep @ 95% modulation, out put is right around 110 watts pep.
BUT, I also use a TS-350 on the Washington and have no problems. The SSB audio quality is very clear and clean. I hope this answers some of your question with my experience with these 2 units.

I've owned a KL-203 for years. And it does a great job on SSB. I see over 150 watts CLEAN & CLEAR output. You need to run no more than 1-2 watts DK into any KL Amp. And it will serve you well.

Yes it does Cactus_29 I have a Ranger 2950DX with a Texas Star DX350 HDV set up as a base unit 20 amp for the radio and 75 for the amp when I turn it up Mostly side band. Was looking for a few watts in the mobile Cobra 25 am olny. wilson 1000 was going to get a good power mic or noise cancle mic.and a small amp am olny the price is right on RM amps I was thinking small and going to plug it into the power outlet in the work van. Whats best for this???? I dont know. |

I would personally get the KL 200p and run it with the Cobra 25. Keep the Cobra 25 as close to stock as possible with no more then 2 to 3 watts dead key max @ 100% modulation. Keep a eye on your amp so it doesn't get to hot, and Keep the VSWR under 1.5 and it should work out fine.
Note: from the factory The transistors they install in the KL 200p units will either be MRF-455 or SD1446. I would stay away from the RM-3 units.
The power outlet in the work van needs to be able to handle 15 to 20 amps draw. IF it can't handle this or you get some noise from the charging system on TX or RX you will have to wire it direct to the battery. I ran into this problem with my 2 meter 75 watt rig running it to the accesssory power plug of my GM car, could not get full power even with the engine running.
Sounds like your running the same set up on your base as I'm using,(have many radios I use from time to time) 2950DX and TS-350 with I-max 2000gpk @ 65 feet. Maybe when the probagation rolls in we can talk.
