my 2970 amber face model sometimes will just start drifting real bad on frequency. i can be listing to it and it will just start like someone is turning the clarifier back and forth and it will just start drifting. it might do it when i first turn it on or it might do it intermitently after it's been on a while. sometimes when i first turn it on it may be as buch as 10kc off then it may just come back on frequency like nothing is wrong. i have it hooked directly to the battery.also at times the RX may just drop out and all i hear is the white noise. it maybe coincidental but this all started after the face was removed to change out the bulbs.

is the clarifer unlocked? if you changed out
the bulbs yourself id go back thru it make
sure everything is right. th rx could be anything from bad coax to bad connection on the pl259
to the back of radio jack for the antenna coming loose [which ive had happen to me]

clarifier is not unlocked and connections are good on the coax and on the radio connector. the problem is intermitted too driving me batty,it will work fine then it's just like someone is truning the clarifier back and forth yesterday it started doing it while i was talking on the radio so it also does it on transmit.

Check the plug connector's going from the cpu to the circuit board. Also check the connection going to the clarifier itself. Your problem did not show up until it had been taken apart, this is what I would check before sending the radio to the shop. Remember, RCI, is the best place to send it.

It sounds like your Phase Locked Loop (PLL) is slipping. A competent tech can adjust it so it stays locked. You can't do it yourself without a frequency counter.
