Hi all, I've finished making my Gizmotchy 4 beam antenna for 11 meters and now that I'm doing my amateur license, can I use a ATU on my antenna for other bands?

it might work on 10 and 12 with that antenna but anything other I don't think it's going to tune very well if all.

Keith an ATU is Antenna Matching Unit - really a misnomer as it truthfully does not match the antenna, just tricks the radio into thinking its matched.

If you mount it at the antenna feedpoint, then it truly is an antenna matching unit. If you mount it at the radio end of the feedline, then it is an impedance matching unit operating with variable system losses.

237 is absolutely right. An antenna tuner at the radio does not tune the antenna itself. It only makes the radio think the antenna is 50 ohms impedance. And while it only tricks the radio, it does serve a useful purpose. An otherwise useless antenna may become "Somewhat" usefull. |
