Ok guys, I've never had a base station and I'm looking into setting one up in my shop in the back yard. My plan is to use my magnum 257 with a kl-300 possibly on a power supply. The antenna will most likely be an IMAX 2000. My concern is the shop is a wood frame structure with metal roof and siding and I don't if that'll be an issue or not and how far above the roof I need the base of the antenna. I'll most likely run a gpk as I'm in a subdivision and do have neighbors but no hoa. Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated and if more info is needed ill do my best to give it as accurately as possible.

Generally you would want to strive to have the bottom of your antenna one wave length (33.6 feet) above the ground. If you check your standing wave after install you should be good when you have an acceptable standing wave.
As far as running a kl300 with a magnum 257 you need to keep in mind the RMS input recommended for this amplifier are 1 to 4 watts input, with probably around a 30 watt pep. If this is the early model magnum 257 that has two transistors putting our no more than about 30 watts pep you should be fine. If this is the new 257 that produces 80 watts pep you would have a problem and most likely damage the amplifier with that much pep output.

I meant to add that the peak of my shop roof is right at 16 feet at the highest if that matters. Would I need to put the antenna base 33 ft above that or the ground?

Yes the 257 is the older 30 watt model. I actually got it in 2003 and got the kl-300 around 2005 to use with it in my old truck but haven't used it in a long while.

The kl line of amplifiers like a low dead key, take care not to hit it too hard on the dead key.
As for as the roof, you need to be one wave length above ground, {aka, dirt) so the base of your antenna at 33.6 feet. |
