Just wondering if the signal needle on your radio is working correctly? Can you try another radio?

We have tons of noise here to from electric wires/tranformer and its been like that for years.

But I have also have had interference from a touch lamp, neighbor had drill battery charging which caused interference etc. etc.
Stuff like that can be corrected.

If you have a Walkie Talkie or RF tracking meter you can try and track down noise sources.

I have tracked down noise sources using a walkie talkie.

One time I had terrible noise and when I unplugged our touch lamp it quit.

With a Walkie Talkie I tracked down another noise source which was the neighbor charging a drill battery in his garage. The neighbors garage was about 50 yards or so away from my antenna.

Neon signs like stores use can cause interference.

I have found that I could not stop noise sources at my cb radios but had to find the source of the noise and eliminate it in order for the noise to stop.

Years ago when I lived at another house I had a terrible noise at certain times of the day.
I tracked it down using a walkie talkie and found it to be a chiropractor offices equipment.
That office was 3-4 blocks from my antenna.

Good luck & I hope you find it!

Odd thing about noise, I had a transformer with a bad ground a mile away from me. The power company fixed the problem and things got quiet till a neighbor installed a dog barrier.

Meant to add this in the last posting, get a GOOD line filter, Tripp Lite makes a good one. Copper may be able to get them. You want one big enough to handle say a 40-50 amp supply or radio. It'll help with noise coming in and going out.

Get one or more of the books published by the ARRL and FCC about noise and what to do. The FCC most likely will still send you one for free.

Remember too, there is NO 100% ground. Check all connections for hot or ground, make sure you have no loop connections, check florescent lights in the home. Touch lamps are bad about noise. If noise goes away in the rain, there's likely a bad ground connection on a power pole or street light.

Plasma TVs can get you from houses away, heaven forbid you wear a hearing aid around one.

Be safe! Gotta go! Had my nose septum worked on Tuesday and Thursday. Pain!

My noise goes away while raining and
I have called the power company more than a few times over the years but they never did anything here to help with the noise. But it doesn't hurt to try and contact your power company as they may be willing to help out such as in Pressmans case.

Line filter did not help here but each situation is different so who knows?...

I have the ARRL Handbooks as Pressman mentions and they have been very helpful to me.

Good luck!

when i put my antenna back up is when i first got it.i didnt have it 3 months ago.this guys big shop wasnt built yet too, and i put another new antenna up and still have it. i put it 30 feet from the one up high, and i have two radios on base , i went out in my truck i have 3# noise level i drove down the street turned right it went away turned around and found the strongest signal in front of a house that by chance he has a grow shop in town and might be doing it at home too. i called the power co, to have them check transformer they said it would show up but that house has a lot of power draw around 3pm sundays its quiet after then 5pm its back it might be quiet at night but i dont get up to see, i put a filter on and it helps but i cant hear from town ten miles away also i get it from 26mhz to 29 ,30 and above is quiet so i am thinking its grow lights,if i can get him to change his timers.thanks

I just recently purchased a Tripp Lite 8 outlet ISOBAR line filter. I plugged my Ranger 2995 into it but it did not help with my incoming interference noise.
(That's just my situation though)

But from expermenting I discovered a couple of things...

We have a touch lamp that causes interference to my cb radio. I plugged the touch lamp into the Tripp lite line filter and interference stopped!

Our microwave when running also caused interference to my cb radio.
I plugged microwave into Tripp Lite line filter and interference stopped!

Sometimes, you have to use filtering at both ends to resolve issues. I have an article on interference I wrote for my last job, I'll see if I can find it, type it back into this computer and post it. May take me a while, lot of stuff still in boxes after moving.

Rodder - mention a few things things
1) it might be causing interference to Emergency Services.(True it might be)

2) if the FCC track it to his home they can fine him thousands of dollars.(True - they can if it causing interference to ANY service)

3) An inexpensive filter could reduce both risks.

No guarantees, but it might help

Chokes might help depending on the type of noise - is it RADIATED to the power line or direct connection. The best answer is try it and see.

Try to use a individual ground to an independent ground rod for your radio, antenna and any other communication. where I have to run a long ground cable for my connection I use the center wire of the rg-213 but, leave the shield on the coax so the cable will not act as an antenna due to any stray rf. Do not connect the shield to the ground. Just the center wire. Also by leaving the shield on the cable it will help shield any interference from being picked up through the grounding cable.

RFI can end up in power cables by the cable either being directly connected to the source (such as noise travelling along mains power lines or alternator whine in a car), or by it being transmitted like a radio signal, such as spark plug noise.

How is your SWR? How is your connection's? You can also put a shield over your power cable on both positive and negative cable. Make sure your body of the car or truck has a really good ground connection to the frame. This will include the hood , door's, lid's or even tail gate's. Remember with any shield do not let it connect at either end to the center cable. Alway's seal each end of the cable when a shield is involved. Choke's are good so is ceramic disk capacitor and electrolytic capacitor for filter's. The electrolytic cap's can also help provide a more stable voltage for your radio's. It will help stop any spike's or surges. If you use a ham antenna tuner ( I am talking high quality ) it will help filter some noise on the antenna side of the radio. Once every six month's always check you cable's and connection's. This is what I have done to help with my noise. It will not take care of everything but, it will help somewhat. Last but not least you can purchase for about $200.00 a B.H.I. FILTER. You can install this inside your radio or buy it as an external speaker to take from radio to radio. This is the best filter for the audio side of the noise I have ever seen and it does not cut your receive any for it is on the audio side.

If none of the above or in any of the article's seem to help you enough then look up the information on the B.H.I. filter. They have a video on the performance. You can also see a video on u-tube. Remember the B.H.I. is a dsp audio filter that goes in the audio circuit or as an external speaker.

Dale we have a direct TV box but it does not cause interference to my radio like yours does.
I got the tripp lite off a online website.

Hope you get your problem figured out Dale!

the box [lights up blue ] and then theres a
small black box labeled ac power supply
this little box is where my headaches are.
right now time has been limited but i did make
a rf choke with the extra coax which DID help
but there was only enough for 2 wraps 8 inches round. wrapped with black tape and ties

We also have the two boxes for Direct TV...
Maybe I should check again as some of my noise
could be coming from that little box...
I'll check and let you know for sure...

yup its my little square black box. not the big
square one. my sanyo flatscreen tv also puts a tiny bit of noise in my recieve but nothing to
im gonna worry about. the choke i made outta the extra cable helped a little.i was looking at
surge protectors last nite at walmart they had
a G.E. model that claimed rfi and emi elimination
wonder if it would help.noise now only blocks out
signals out about 60 miles away or more.dx seems fine though
