I am currently experiencing coarse tune issues with this radio. Tuning it to center frequency on SSB is extremely touchy. I have been doing some study on replacing the 3/4 turn 20K Pot with a 10 turn pot to do the same job. I have the pot in hand now, even comes with a turn counter.
My question is about disconnection of the existing pot. I would like to keep the radio so I can put it back to stock should I ever want to. What is the best way to disconnect the pot now in use? I was considering cutting the PC board tracers to the pot and soldering the leads to the new pot to terminals next in line from the corresponding leg of the pot. The new pot will be mounted in a metal casing on the under side of the radio. This way I will retain use of the FINE tune and have the coarse tune much less finicky about moving the frequency about.
I will be using shielded leads to the new pot as well.

Id would just marry the clarifers together
i gotta s.s. 3900 i got from copprs it has the
dual clarifer aswell so i know what u mean.
marring the together the fine will track tx/rx
so no need for the course anyway. besides course has way too much slide for my liking

Hi Dale,
Not planning to marry the two. I want to be able to move the receive frequencies around separately. This is taking the place of the coarse tune only. And with so much slide on the coarse side this makes it a lot easier to move and center on desired freq. As original it's a tricky son of a bitch to get the radio on center freq. |

well i do agree in stock form they are very tricky.
however in my experience the more slide the moore
the radio drifts especially on start up.i also
had a cobra 2k with a 10 turn clarifer it was awful
radio was very tempature senitive. if it cooled off
in the house i had to re-adjust it ,even leaving
the radio on 24 /7 didn t help at all. just be advised
