--Hi, guys. Years ago, a few people I knew would put a length of wire connected to the bottom of the spring via a ring terminal, and then the wire would wrapped around the first four to six inches of the antenna, then secured with black tape or something like that. What was the point of that? They called it a "load" or something. Did it give the antenna more bandwidth or something? Thanks.

Not a thing. It would just be some little voodoo thing passed from one sap to another.

The short piece of wire would be "invisible" to the antenna. Like using a screw on a clamp on the vertical part of a base station antenna. Say you used a real long screw sticking out from the clamp. Would it change anything? No.
