I'm putting up a new A99 with GPK. Mast pole will be attached to side of house with brackets and cemented into ground. I will have an in-line lightening arrestor.

Some bloke said I should isolate the antenna from the mast pole by wrapping a PVC pipe around the mast pipe. What do you think?

I thought having the A99 directly attached to pole would provide an extra layer of lightening protection.

Nothing will protect the antenna itself. If lightning were to hit the antenna it will go into a million piece's. What you need to do is get a polyphaser and put it at the base of the antenna. The coax connects to each end of it. This will help protect your coax and your radio. Follow the instruction's it came with.

OK... but what do you think about isolating the antenna?

If I do not isolate the antenna, will that hurt the performance of the antenna?

Do NOT isolate the antenna from the pole. That bloke gave you horrible advice.

I agree with Tech833. My old one was not isolated from a steel post. I worked 80 countries and 49 States with it, at 4ft above ground.

Sorry it took so long to get back with you but listen to the tech's. They are 100 percent correct. do not isolate the antenna. Also the ground plane kit on the a-99 does not really help. If I were you I would get an Imax 2000 with the ground plane kit. The ground plane kit on the 2000 really does work. If you want solid advice Tech 833 is your man to go to. He knows everything you need to know.

I want you all to know that i did go with the A-99 with the GPK radials. I am super-impressed with it.

Years ago, I had an A-99 without the GPK. Today, my new A-99 with the GPK is MUCH BETTER than the old setup. So, I really think the GPK makes a difference.

Although, the other variable is this: the new A-99 is about 8 feet higher than the old one.

You need to read the articles by TECH 833 on this web site Copper has on the different antenna's. There you will find the tech information your searching for. I had the Antron 99 without and with the gpk and I had seen no increase in performance with the gpk whatsoever .

For you to tell if there are any difference you have to test it at the same height without and with the GPK . You had raised your antenna and that is why you are seeing an improvement.

No matter what- You are getting better performance with your new setup, so that's excellent. Call it good, my friend! Don't question it, just enjoy the benefits of your efforts.

Tech 833, Did you not say in one of your testing post of the A-99 with the GPK that you had seen no improvement with the GPK on the A-99
