Get a 500 Ohm Pot from Radio Shack and put the center pin to the Speaker output "return" and one of the end contacts of the pot to "chassis" ground.

Would this work on a washington(uniden)base also?

this will work on the cobra/uniden chassis, but not the galaxy as in the topics primary question.

for the cob/un, the speaker is grounded in rx but not tx. so by using a pot to gnd, then the speaker has a variable "return" path to gnd during tx. and since the audio for rx and tx flows through the audio ic in the cob/un there will be audio (talkback) during tx.

for the galaxy, the speakers "return" is always grounded. a pot here would do nothing. also the audio on tx does not go through the audio ic. so there is no way to get talkback like that.

What is the speaker output return? Where is it located in a Cobra 2000? Is chassis ground the metal "frame" of the radio?

I cant remember exactly what the value of the pot was but I bought a variable pot with a off position at Radshack that was in a large frame " size of the volume knob on a mobile--not the value just the frame the pot was mounted in" I bought a pack of knobs that fit it and inside the saturn, on the back right of the component side, there is a resistor --again cant remember what the resistor placement # is --mabey someone can fill in the blanks for me--its been over 3 yrs ago that I did this---I desolidered one side of the resistor from the board, solidered in a wire where the one side of the resistor was, then connect the wire to the large frame pot that I put in the back of the radio, and solidered a wire to the other side of the resitor and then to the pin or leg to the pot and solider the other wire to the other leg on the pot. Before you solider the wires to the pot, hold or tape them to the legs to see if you have the right wire to the right leg. You know you do if you can cut the pot on and key up and you can hear yourself and are able to adjust the volume of talk back with the pot. I hope mabey 307 or someone can help fill in the blanks for me.
