Hey 307 or 181,I'm gonna try to get an A99 sometime in the near future.Well,I don't have the
means to stick it way up in the clouds so my question is whether my antenna should be up as high as a multiple wave length OR should I just
put it up as high as I can get it?As of right now I have the means to get it up around 20-24 ft right now from the ground to the base of the antenna.Thanks for any info!

Actually 33 feet is about where it should be .

Try 36, a full wavelength. I have owned an anteon and once you get it above 36 it works great

I was under the impression that the higher your antron is the better..i thought the wave length hight only applied to dipoles......Please explain this to me...thanks

Jeff, that question is a bit complicated and this is by-no-means definitive, only my observations and thoughts.

The deal is, the earth has an effect on any antenna when they are close relative to the wavelength. At about a 1/4 above true earth the antenna starts to decouple (lesser effects) somewhat from earth. The higher you go the less coupling effect you have. Different antennas may act a bit different here, but for the most part they are all affected in some way by being close to earth.

Ground affects seem to have more of an effect on line of site signals. DX seems to react differently under varying conditions so it is hard to tell if improvement in signal can be noted at any particular height. What height does for local work is probably a bit easier to understand. Just get above all the stuff on the ground and you will probably get out farther.

What height does for DX is related to the ultimate feed point matching and the resulting angle of departure the antenna exhibits. These factors change some at different heights above earth.

I find that in 11 meters anything around the 24' range and up is useful in a general way. If you had a way to tell or measure it, you could also probably find a height at any specific location that was better than another, and for sure it might be noted that the base noise levels (ambient noise) at different heights was different or desirable. However, that too can change at different times and under different conditions.

Just get it as high as you can, where it is safe, and convenient, and work that booger. There is no magic bullet regarding height, you just get what you get at different locations. I did not discuss dead spots, but there are such areas. Just hope you are not in one.

Tom, I am sorry. I posted this to you and Steve but somehow Jeff's name came up somehow. Another "Senior Moment" I suspect. Please forgive me.

I can't disagree with what Taz notes either. I am just not real picky about height. However, I have read somewhere that the optium height is typically around .625 wavelength. I have done some experimenting with antenna height using an A99 and although I have gotten some mixed results at times, overall I think you may find that the A99 may actually begin to work well when raised up somewhere around 22'. I seem to recall that is the height where the A99 began to develope good receive responses. Actually, I believe in the "Higher the Better" idea for local ground wave work.

The higher you can get the antenna, the better, in the terms you and I are dealing with. I say, if you can affordably raise the thing over 18 feet, do so. Don't worry for now about 34' and above harmonics. Get it up in the air and TALK! That's more important than anything! Just get it so you can enjoy.
