73's & 88's all!
I have a Z71 Chevy truck and no matter what antenna I put on it and several diff. radios and brand new jumper wires from the radio to the swr meter and grounding it out the b_tt! I can't get my swr's below 2.5!
I did notice that while I was tuning my antenna that when my hand got close to the meter "not touching it mind you!" it dropped to nothing!
Anyone have any ideas? This is driving my nuts!
Thanks in advance!

727,

Sounds like a ground problem. What kind of antenna are you using? One of those fiberglass hummgevities? 102" whip mounted in a hole in the rear bumper works real well. So does a mag mount on the middle of the roof, although you will get some SWR change when opening the doors.

Tech181 - I've used based loaded coils with 5' steel whips and fiberglass top loaded antenna's.
I'll give the hole in the bumper a try!

Thanks,

Hi Again,
I was using a metal mount on the bed of the truck.
THe truck has a 3" body lift kit on it. I thought the lifting spacers were acting as an insulator to the frame so I used a 10 gauge wire from the antenna mount to the frame with no positive results. I'll try the Wilson 5000 antenna and if that don't work Im going to blow up the truck, get a pogo stick and buy me 2 tin cans and about 40 miles of string! Hey, I wonder if anyone makes a linear for that?
Thanks ALL!

727,I hope you have had some luck by now..I have a 98 chevy no lift power to my radio from batterie grounded to the closest chassis ground possible texas star 400v same shortest or closest chassis ground possible,102" steel whip on drivers side front stake pocket on bed of truck,3 1/4" bolts holding mount on,swr's flat with amp off 1:1 with amp on low variable maxed out 1:4 with amp on high.Have you checked your coax for continuity? If coax is good check that all grounds are on a clean surface,Did have a 102" fiberglass whip swr's were high switched to a steel 102 swr's dropped big time.I talk all over the U.S.,Brittish Colombia Canada ect, never run my amp on high.Cleaner on low.Good luck, and if you run a ground to the frame use a regular flat braided automotive ground strap, again sand off paint rust dirt ect down to clean metal, for best ground.Hope you get it going..Take care, yote

Hey 727 I had the same problem with my 86 chev 1/2 ton.
I tryed with a hustler center load and went to a wilson 4 ft fiber glass with high swr's.
I did try every thing went right ot the frame.(GERRRR)
After banging my head on the dash board, (ouch) I tossed out the mirrow mounts and bought a mag mount for my wilson 1000 the swr is the same form my car to truck.
Just my 2 cents, 73's Len
