I ordered an Astatic MobileMax from Copper... received it along with a VR9000 Tuesday. I hooked them up and when I tried to talk, there was a lot of squealing. I picked up the MobileMax and noticed that when I touched it, the squealing stopped. I adjusted the mic gain and it had to be turned CCW nearly all the way for the squealing to stop when I wasn't touching it. As long as I had my hand on the cover or a finger on the metal of the mic plug, I could turn the mic gain fully clockwise with no squealing. I tried several different mic's with the same results. Thinking that it was probably a ground problem, I took the top cover off to test continuity of the mike ground to chasis ground and it seemed to be good. When I visually examined the solder joint on the ground pin, it wasn't very good. I touched the wires and continuity to ground was last so I heated the joint just enough to let the existing solder flow and fill the pin. I tested continuity again and touched the wires and there was no loss of continuity. I hooked it back up to power and the radio and plugged in the mic. I talked to a friend on the other side of town and he said it sounded better than it ever had. I disconnnected the power and the mic and replaced the cover. I talked a few minutes after I put it back together when my friend said it was starting to chirp. It got worse and now ALL it does is squeal when I key up, no matter what the mic gain position. It even squeals when I play back a recorded sound byte. Is this something that you have heard of happening before? Is it repairable? Should I send it back to Copper?
