How much trouble is it, and which one should I get, to go in my Melaka. Can it be done without a bunch of hassel? I hope that someone can advise me

Thanks

A bigger final will gain you absolutely nothing. You may get 4 more watss out of it , thats all. Leave it alone , it will sound much better...

put a matched pair of dual finals and associated components in it if you really want to do that. it would probably cost less than one 477/497. i'd suggest getting an amp. you get more bang for the buck that way.

I have done 2 or 3 MELAKA The first thing the transformer is small than the other galaxy base.If yoou want to keep going the Voltage reg. on the power supply board need beef up. The next thing you need to do is beef up Tr51 & Tr50 (more amps). Then do the circuit change on Tr56.After all that you may get 5 to 7 watts more swing Even after super mods. My advice is to leave it alone. You know the old saying. Do the super mods, and enjoy your radio.,it's apretty good radio for the money. Good luck 73

If you want dual finals go with a 2517 if not stick to a melaka, besides thats a big heat sink, why not a matched quad of 2312s with a fan and an upgrade of suporting circuits.Just think 52 watts am ,120 watts ssb and a very unique radio.

you can add another final to the melaka. Then add a fan from radioshack for 17.00.

I think it would work pretty good.

The 2517 has a 8 amp transformer same a saturn or 2980. The other radio like gal/2980 will not do, 120watts on ssb. I think Bigbob need his watt meter look at. I tuned 2or3 2517. the 2517 is a pretty good radio too!!!

Apparently I type in a foreign language or people don't read my entire post.I know a place where I can get a 40 amp transformer that'll slip right in,and you're bright at figuring things out TAZ(drill extra holes for the 2 extra finals, use jumpers to tie in and a small amount of capacitance to compensate for the added inductance of the jumpers, but leave that up to a tech, then replace the big modulator transistor;oh you may have to volt the finals, but I think beading solder on the pctrace for added current handling may be sufficient.)I knew an old guy(90)when I was a kid who walked all over my home town his nickname was LIGHTNING,never new why.

I had a saturn once. It buzzed and hummed and mad all kind of racket.Open it up somebody put a transformer from a Ps 8 power supply. You take the transformer out of the radio it was quite, bring back and the humm started again. the cure .I order a transformer from ranger(2980)about 100 bucks at that time. The transformer emitted a RF signal the reciever picked it up. The transformer had to be shieled. I tried tin foil and the whole bite. Try it you might get lucky. Good luck.

This 40 amp transformer is shielded, the rf signal is ac hum,if you need to use an unshielded transformer rewire radio to accept external unit.Or do this experiment with a 2950 and use a 40 amp power supply,or why not a 2970 and a matched quad of finals, then get a 5000 watt inverter to power the 3 floor fans to keep it cool but then how are you going drive the stinking car.And boy you got bored,A 100 BUCKS AHAHAHAHA OHOHOHOHO,don't mind me I'm a pink bunny ahaha ohoho heheheeeeeeee..........You're alright Lightning,i THINK i'M WIGGING OUT HEHEHEEEEEHAHAHAHAAAA.

Big b. If you're going to all that trouble to to do this for extra wattage, get real, buy a amp like a ss225 or texas star. The old saying is true A FOOL AND HIS MONEY WILL SOON PART. Go ahead do what you want. the tech will probably like to see you coming HA HA!!! BUT just think if you ever want to sell your radio and it's screw up!!!!

The reason I gave up is because you need to quit waisting your money to get another 2 watts out of this radio. I was like that at one time , then I realized for the cost of the radio plus the labor to get a few more watts out of it I ended up getting a Kenwood TS-850SAT for a bit lower price. Full 100 watts plus a song and dance to beat...I answer everyone I can , except when the subject changes with in the topic , I can not keep up...

Help..someone find me...
