I have an 1996 Toyota Tocoma Pickup and has quite a bit of what appears to be motor noise on the cb, I thought it might be alt noise, or electronic ignition noise, but when I disconnect the coax from the radio, the noise goes away. I have the radio wired direct from the battery, and have the Wilson 5000 body mount antenna mounted on the front rail of the bed with a riser that has a gound wire to the truck frame. I am fully aware there could be many things causing this.Any thoughts on how to remedy this. Thanks

you may have a loose plug wire or a spark jumping to your motor from the plug wires. open the hood and observe your motor running at night with no lights on, you should see the spark if there is one

When you disconnect the coax from the radio and the noise goes away you have just proven that there is a RFI problem. It could be bad plug wires ,distributor cap, rotor,or a combination of these .Possibly alternator(alternator noise will be a high pitched whine that changes with engine speed). Many ,many times you will find that someone has disconnected the ground wire that attaches from the engine to the body.Good luck in locating this aggravation.

My nickels worth...

I have a HR-2510 that has been in my car for a while now (a year or two?)...anyway, within the last two weeks, my recieve has become noisy as can be...my radio used to be SUPER quiet (one reason I love it so much)...anyway, for whatever darn reason, all of a sudden now my radiator fan (electrical) is causing the RX noise...don't know what I am going to do to fix it yet...maybe disassemble, and clean the brushes, maybe even a .001 cap accross the leads..

Once the radiator fan "cuts off" as it spins down, I hear "click-click=click click-click" in the radio (the clicking ocurrs less and less as the fan slows down...once the fan stops, the noise stops.

Also, removing the coax completely eliminates the noise....its annoying!

FirebirdTN,

Does your coax run near the engine compartment, as in do you have a fender mount fiberglass antenna?

Easy thing first. Does another radio recieve the same noise? If not it might be the radio because my 2510 is the quietest radio I have ever heard.

Chances are it's the fan though, if you are not hearing other noise in your recieve, such as fuel pump, ignition noise, alternator, etc.

Unfortuneatly, the 2510 is the only radio I own, but I have had it since 93 (bought it new from Coppers), and it has also been one of the quietest radios I have ever heard, until about two weeks ago...

I have a Wilson 1000 Mag mount, trunk mounted, so the coax doesn't go close to the engine. I do not hear any other motor noises in my RX (I have power windows, seats, etc...tried them all, they don't show up in RX)...Also, if I reduce the rf gain, the fan motor noise is reduced as well...

I will tackle it this weekend...And a buddy of mine is coming down with a 29LTD that he wants me to look at...might throw it in the car for test purposes...

FirebirdTN,

Well if it's just the motor noise your radio is picking up and nothing else, it could very well be the motor.

With your radio on, turn your ignition to the "ON" position but don't start the engine. See if you hear the fuel pump kick in.

Try that 29LTD and see what happens. Keep up posted.

Figured I would update those that are interested in this...

I was kind of wrong about receive noise...ignition noise, windshiled wipers, windows...etc..all of it does appear slightly in my radio, BUT the 2510 has such a good noise blanker, it wipes 99% of it all out...I always leave the noise blanker on, so I had forgot about other noises getting into my receive...

The radiator fan however, the noise blanker isn't making a scrap of difference, on or off, and the noise is really loud compared to the other noises that appear in the RX with the blanker OFF.

I decided to drive to work one day with the radiator fan disconnected (yes, dangerous, but my drive to work is 45 minutes, mostly highway driving)...Anyway, I didn't have ANY problem, that kind of pinned it on my radiator fan (like I had suspected).

This past weekend, I took my radiator fan apart (even though it wasn't designed to be dismantled)...along with regualr dust, all kinds of black soot fell out of it...Once FULLY apart, the stator was almost black. I also noticed, that out of the 8 brushes in the fan, 2 of them opposite each other, were worn down to the point of they are probably making intermittant contact...After cleaning and reassembly, the noise hasn't shown up yet, but I bet it will, since the 2 brushes are worn all the way down...

Moral of the story....can you belive my 2510 is letting me know my radiator fan is about to go out??? LOL

Hey everybody. Whatever happened to the radiator fan? Did it let you know when dinner was ready? If so, what did it serve you?
