I have a shooting star 225 plus mobile amplifier and the problem I am having is as follows,,,
The amp does amplify and it is clean sounding but I am unsure what to expect on output wattage from this unit, when I first hooked it up to a Uniden 68xl, I was getting on low a dead key of around 40 watts swinging to just over 100 on medium 100 swinging to 120/w and on high 125 swinging to 140/w,, now I have it hooked up to a cobra 29 nw st. with the soundtracker disabled I have a connex echo board installed and I think the radio is keying 2/w and swinging to 5/w,, now with the amp on low I am dead keying 30 watts swinging to 80 on medium it dead keys about 100 and does not hardly swing at all and on high it only keys around 90 and barely hits 100, Do I need to further tune my cb radio to drive this amp better if so how can I do this, hook up in truck is as follows
cb radio direct to battery pos and neg
amplifier direct to battery pos and neg
102" stainless steel whip with spring.. for the antenna.
about 6' of coax to the amp and about 4' of coax from the amp to the antenna....using 8 guage stereo amp wire for both pos and neg to amp...any help would be greatly appreciated....thanx in advance and 73's
or is this what I should expect from this amp...thanx

Barakuda318, I've owned one or two myself and believe me, the 225 is as stated but driving the amp to it's full capacity. Re, running a dual final radio or a radio that's been super mod to give the amp a low dead key and swing it's full capality. (Radio allowing) I ran one for a short period behind a Cobra 148 and had the radio super mod'ed. Not sure on the procedure to do that, but the amp was as clean as if it was running at low power and the radio was doing a 1 watt dead key and swinging 18 PEP AM. I got 125 watt swing on low, 170 on med, and 210 on high. If you drive it with a dual final radio, you won't see much more if any power out of it and will seriously heat the amp up. If your strict on running your Cobra, get the radio super mod or at least tuned to the amp, and you'll get about the same output. Also keep in mind you've got a good sidepiece as it's virtually the same as the Palomar 250, Palomar 225, Galaxy 225, and so forth. All use either 2 MRF455 transistors or 2 SD1446 transistors which are only capable of so much, no matter what amp their installed in. 73's!

I used to own a white tornado 225 back in the early 90s and it always worked good for me! I drove it with a uniden grant(older style)and always had good reports. Inexpensive and IMHO a good starter amp for someone that doesn want to get a big box.
