you have to use a very low input to the rxer (less than 1uv) so that the agc is not triggered. if it is triggered, it will throw off your low level sensitivity. i have seen some sites on the net they say to tune for max audio reading on a scope or af vtvm while putting in a 100uv signal. if you do this, the agc is active. by tuning for max audio reading on scope or af vtvm, you are actually detuning the rxer, and the agc is becoming laxed to give the higher readings. in other words, when you are done, you may not be able to hear the distant stations that you had b4. but the strong local stations may read higher on your smeter.

you also have to know that what you put into ch1 is the same as what you put into ch40 when tuning from max sensitivity but yet keeping eveness across the band. the only way to do any of this is with a stable rf gen and a scope, sinad meter, or af vtvm.

so to answer your question, no you can't do it without the 'fancy tools'. well actually you could with a second radio as the rf gen, and an 'rf sampler' but you would need to be more 'experienced' in rf testing to do it this way than with the proper equipment.

one more thing jyd, i'm not familiar with the vr-9000, but i do know it is the same or VERY similiar design as the galaxy dx mobiles. if it is like those, then the rx on 11 meters after conversion needs a good bit of touch up work to get your 'ears' to where they are from the factory for 10mtrs. if you don't have anyone close by who can tune the rx properly, i'd ship it off to 307. i've seen his bench (photo) and it looks as though he has the necessary equipment to get it 'right' for you.
