RFparts says those tubes are rated at 65 watts a piece, they can put out greater but at a much reduced life. The add in copper says 400watts max and you're getting over 500,you might give them a few more hours of burn in time.

TURN DOWN THAT DRIVE and really compare their ratings and get a current rf parts cat.

there not rated at 65 watts a peice, wattage depends on spefications of the amp voltage, ect and taz it did do 500 with an audio,it does 400 now why counld'nt it do 500 with tubes twice the size.the el-509 is the strongest tube in its catagorya 1 driveing 3 in a galaxy 1000 will swing 1200 watts and 2 el-509 will do 500.never mind you have to try it then you will know first hand

with 2 6kg6a's it does 400 and when i went to the el-509 which is the strongest tube in its catagory,el-509 has a very noticeable bigger size little longer and bigger around.i am just trying to figure out why the 509 does not last but 20 minutes, same filament voltage, tunes up good, what could the other reason be? i could useb a tech here please.

jyd do you know what burn in time is,let tubes remain in standby(filaments on,no transmit)for 10 hours before transmit, run amp on low for at least 50 hours then operate as usual. It seems inconvenient but you want maximum life right.I would surmise the manufacturer of said amp did so before putting it on the shelf.

jyd as for rating of tubes;if someone gave you a 50 lb.weight to lift 100 times with one arm in 10 min. you might get pooped out quickly;reduce that to 5 lbs. and you may not get tired at all.Too much voltage or too much drive= too much heat, the bain of all electronics.

there is no burn in time with this type of tube.

Here's the real reason: EL519 = 40kg6 = 40 volt filament supply. EL509 = 6kg6 = 6 volt filament supply. If you plug a 6 volt tube in a 40 volt socket you can't expect it to last long.
