I have a Cobra 29 classic that I just bought off of ebay that is dead. It was described being that way. The meter lights up but that is it. Nothing else works, the channel indicator does not light, and no recieve or modulation. I put it on my meter and it doesnt even try to key up. I took the cover off to look for obvious problems but didnt find anything. The one thing I did notice though is that TR 23 heats up and gets real hot. Seem like more than it should. The radio has never been into and is bone stock. Any suggestions? Thank you ...Eddie |

If the channel indicator does not light up , most likely it is the 8 volt regulator. That would explain all the problems...

well, mine lights up the channels change but there is no transmit or receive |

Taz , yours is probably the PLL or the 10.240 Reference Crystal. His is most likely the 8 volt regulator.

Well , "IF" it is the PLL , you can replace the chip. If it is not the PLL , it would have to go into surgery...

its probly the pll, since i was doing a mod for receive boost which uses pin 14 of the pll and solder fell on the board. |

You probably created a solder bridge on the board. Use a solder sucker, or some solder wick and clean around the area where you were working. Be careful not to leave the iron near any ICs or other simi-conductors to long so as to avoid heat damge.
If that don't work, try undoing the mod you did. Maybe it was done incorrectly or if it came from some internet site, might not work as advertised |
