307 : I noticed in a radio magazine a new 27 MHz mobile / base antenna called the Super Lance that needs no ground plane. It can be used in a loft ,on a mast ,on a window sill,or in a boat.Good for 500 watts and has the added bonus of very low bleed over .It's only $39.99 plus shipping .Do you think this is a sham or might it be legit.

vernonott-

some of those groundless antennas are OK, some are not. Some require you to use a specific length of coax, some come with a specific length of coax that is integral to the tuning and may not be removed.

I own a Wilson NG-4, which is basically a tunable J-pole. It works pretty nicely, is only 4 ft. tall, handles up to 300w(according to the specs) and doesn't need any special coax length. It goes for about 40 bucks, if you can find one. I bought it to use with as Eagle Spitfire handheld and was able to make several barefoot contacts over 1000 miles with it hanging about 5ft off the ground.

It's up to you, vernonott, to buy that Super Lance antenna and give us a product review!! ;-)

Sorry this one flew by me...I do not think if I were you I would go with a "Cheap" antenna. The Antenna is the heart of any set up. You can have a junk radio and a good antenna , you most likey will sound better than a guy with a good radio and a junk antenna. To get away without a groud plane the power is re-coupled into the sheild (return) of the coax. Kind of like a marine antenna. A.E.A makes an antenna that is sort of the same except the price is a lot more. I know of one person using it in an apartment and it works great.

Ok 707 : The Super Lance should be delivered by Tuesday. The only thing that bothers me is the advertisement about it.Says it makes big base station antennas obsolete.Well it will be fun to experiment with for a few days.

Looks like about a 30" piece of 3/4" pipe with a coax connector on one end.Scanner World in Albany N.Y. has been selling them since 1997.I just saw it in one of their sale catalogs last week.
