Swamper,

yes the 300 has a preamp. The downfall (if you call it one) is that the amp has to be on for the pre-amp to work. Tech 181 did a great review in the Subscribers Preview section. Check it out as it really explains all about this amp.

Also, if Coppers still has the special going, check that out as well under the subscriber section special. A limited number of 300's are on sale for a fantastic price. You should research and buy now if it suits your needs as this price won't last.

cut the center leg of transistor TR3. This will bypass the circuit so you can receive without boost.

Go with the KLv 400. More features, almost same price. Good clean amp with seperate pre-amp. You won't be dissapointed.

Swamper, I have the KL-400, nice little amp. I get good reports and the preamp works great!!! Don't have to have the unit on for the preamp to work. :)

I have a KL-300P that I bought two years ago and the preamp died on it when I was driving through a storm. I am not an electronics wizard so I need to ask if it is worth repairing or just do without the preamp? The amp still works fine otherwise.

Long time since the last post here! You can replace the pre-amp transistor, TR4, if it is blown, with a 2N3904 transistor you can get from R.Shaq...This transistor is a bit more resistant to being blown. When installing, you need to mind the pin-outs as they are different from the stock BF199 (BF199=CEB, 3904=EBC)
