I installed a uniden am/ssb radion in a crew cab 1 ton. The Willson 1000 mag mount antenna has been tuned to 1.1 -1 SWR and seems to receive and send great when the truck is not running. However, when the engine is started it seems as though the spark plugs are giving me so much noise voice can't be heard. How can I fix it. Thanks for your help. |

You didn't say what year the truck is.When spark plug wires age they leak .Also the wires and plugs should be the resistor type. The distributor cap and rotor can cause the sound that you are describing.A bad condenser in the distributor is also a culprit .One last thing to check is a good ground wire between the engine and the cab firewall. |

run the wires directly to battery to start with. then try any noise filter you can get...none work perfect though....bummer. move the radio around the cab a bit see if that helps. use a noise cancelling mike like a astatic or road king 56 mike. good luck |

I have a 88 ford ranger xtra cab small pickup with a v6. I can seem to get rid of the engine noise on recieve.Just about totally blocks incomming when I am on the gas. I have the wires running to battery and firewall.I have an RCI 2950,both models new and old, they both hear the noise.I guess I can try changing plugs and wires first.I am told by my CB shop that noise filters he has might not work. |

blackcat. all persons have a choice in what sort of automobiles they want to buy. obviously you didnt understand someone was asking for help. not an opinion on what type of vehicle to buy, or the quality of what they decide to purchase. i apologize if this seems out of line. |

It is also very important where your antenna is located. Antenna's located at the rear of the vehicle, have the least prevelant ignition noise problems, simply because they are furthest from the engine compartment. Antenna's located on the cowl of the hood are the ones that pick up noise the worst, because they are right next to your ignition system. Just one more thing to be aware of. |

The engine noise is coming through my antenna I would say.I hooked the radio up to a 12 volt motorcycle battery in the front seat and I still got the engine noise.I think I can hear every spark. Its a pickup with a shell on the bed so I have no were else to put the mag mount at.Someone told me it was the fuel pump in the gas tank making the noise and there is nothing I can do.I have 5 cars and this is the only car it makes noise in.Oh, by the way,I have 3 other Fords and my decision to but them did not include whether a CB will work in them or not. |

A lot of Fords are noisey, I had one and it took me a long time to get it worked out, the two things that helped the most (1) I put a filter in the gas tank that i got from Ford. (2) I used a K40 antenna, a K40 is capasitive coupled to ground and kills a lot of noise that comes in from the antenna. I now have a Dodge and had to do not a thing to it and its very quite. The Lighter trick with a small mag mount is a good trick to find out how quite a vehicle is before you buy and i have done it several times before making my final desision and should have done it every time! |

You have to filter the source, not the radio. |

Okay, old trick that DOES WORK. Run your power for the radio with Mini-8x. center conducter for positive, braid for negative. allow at least 4" of seperation on each end for your battery and radio connections. The braid will take all the noise straight to ground. |

Tried it ,it don't work on mine, had to put a .47micro-farad cap across hot and ground on the wiper motor, fan motor, fuel pump, alternator, noise gone period. |

Gunship, not if the noise is on the center conductor, reason for the caps at the source of the noise. |
