Is there a pot that can be adjusted in the VR9000 that serves as an RF gain adjustment? I am considering hooking up an external control for that function. Thanks!

Nope...However you can "De-Tune" the radio a little if you don't want the RX up that high. I could add one for you with some surgery , I would have to find the tie point first...

Honestly it doesnt sound like the RF gain needs to be changed, but more like the needle is WAY stingy... I should have been getting a full meter on someone but instead was getting 9 s-units... Is there a meter adjustment? |

VR-1 and VR-2 is AM / SSB "S" meter. Inject 100uV RF into the radio and set for S-9.

Hmmmm... that's exactly what my tech did - and it still seems to be under what it should be. I am gonna hook up my other radio on the same antenna with my AS100 switch tonight, find a channel that has some ground noise on it but not much traffic and see what the difference in between the two meters.. |

Sure enough, my VR9000 today was reading 2-3 S-units of ground noise.. I switched over to my other radio and it was reading 7 s-units. Guess I need to make an adjustment.. Thanks 307, I appreciate the info! |

747, you say that the vr9000 was 'correctly' set to s9. was the radio that you are comparing the vr9000 against also correctly set to s9??
also, did either or both have the rx section tuned? if done incorrectly to one or both, this could be your problem(if the 1st part listed above isn't the problem). 2 radios can have the rx sections 'tuned'(used losely since so many are tuned incorrectly) and then properly set to s9, but other s-units will be dramatically different(due to the 1st step; tuning of the rx section being done wrong).
it would also help to know the 2nd radio that you speak of so we will know if it should be close to the readings of the vr9000(if both are completely tuned correctly). |

One other note, traditionally with every radio I have used that is in the traditional DX/Galaxy style chassis, the squelch has a range from around 7-8 oclock on the low side and 4-5 oclock on the high side.. 5 pounds ground noise normally squelches out at 12 oclock...
On my VR9000 if the other radios are reading 7 pounds (even though mine shows 2-3), the squelch point is right at around 2 oclock on the knob - which is right on par with what I am used to, compaired to any other radio I have used, along with my now deceased Grant XL..
That leads me to believe that much more that the VR9000's meter is the only thing that is off.. Receive on it the cleanest I have ever heard, but dammed if that stupid meter needs to be tweaked!

The 2nd radio is an older Radio Shack TRC-485.. Has a digital scale S-meter. I sat side by side with a buddy of mine this afternoon and compaired our meters, and his was tuned as well by the same guy.. The RS radio showed 7 S-units of ground noise, and the VR-9000 showed 2-3.. My friend's 148 GTL also showed 7 s-units... |
