This a old crystal mike.4 wire red white shield and green.Can this be wired to a 142gtl?Thanks. |

yes , but the impednce will not match the radio. i would put in a dynamic element instead. just my opinion. some of those old mikes can be converted to accept turner plus 2 parts, etc,or just take an old mobile power mike and put all the parts in this new mike. |

Assuming that age and humidity have not destroyed the element in this mike, it will work fine with nearly ANY tube-type radio, the Yaesu FT-101 transceiver, the old Realistic TRC-457-458 base radios, the ORIGINAL (4-pin) President Washington and the Cobra 139XLR (made only in 1977-1978).
It WON'T function with the 142GTl for TWO reasons. Like RW said, the element won't match the LOW IMPEDANCE requirement of the 142, and it only has ONE ground wire. The reason the 142 has FIVE pins on the mike socket is for TWO separate ground connections. I'm not sure the switch in the mike will even accomodate a newer 5-conductor cord. The switch inside may not have enough contacts.
One small surprise we saw here with old Hi-Z mikes like this Turner or a STRAIGHT (dummy) D-104. Seems the BASE radios like the 2527 and 2990 that use the TURBO echo board built-in HAVE a high-impedance input. The impedance is high enough those mikes sound okay. Sure didn't see anything in the schematic or specifications to predict this. A customer just tried it one night and told me about it. Go figure. This only seems to apply to the BASE versions that use this echo board. The mobiles aren't wired the same way, and sound terrible with a Hi-Z straight mike, just like 99 out of 100 other solid-state radios.
