I just recieved my new vr9000 and installed it in my truck. Works great except when I hook up my external speaker, my swr reading goes over 3 and I get a lot of feedback through the speaker. Without the speaker, I have an swr reading of 1.2 and the radio works great. I tried turning the rf power down and that didn't help, and moving the speaker, no help either.

How is the VR-9000 Grounded? The reason your SWR is higher is most likely the meter is out of cal with a full modulated "squeal". Positive and Negative MUST go to the battery , not chassis ground. Are you using a MAG mount?

I have the radio hooked to the factory cb hook up on the dash(red and black studs on the dash)and the antanna is mounted on the drivers side mirror. This is in a 2000 Freightliner. I don't know where the negative stud is grounded at, if it is just a body ground or a wire to the circuit breaker box. I have heard of some people having ground problems with freightliner trucks but the other one in our fleet have no problem. I had a cobra 29 before this radio and had no problems with grounding. The radio works good in my pick up so I don't think it's the radio. But I don't have an exernal speaker in my pick up.

I'll bet the antenna is not grounded and that's the problem. The mirrors are mounted vai rubber washers for vibration and this will stop ground. Add a wire (thick and short) from the mirror bracket to the hinge bolt. The squeal will go away...

Bigjak,

On our 2000 KW L800 I ran my power wires 10 gauge down thru Floor Direct to Batteries,

Rather then use the Factory CB mount (Red/Black) posts.

I also ran Copper Ground wire from the base of both Antenna Mounts on mirrors direct to door mount bolt.

Also palced EX-speaker behind Drivers Seat At top of cab to avoid feedback.

The Factory Dash wireing on most of the Big Trucks "STINKS".

If your antennas on your Freight are the Roof Mounts / rather than the mirror mounts, put an eyelet under the antenna where it screws into mount to run wire to good ground.

Hope this helps.

We got her working good now. I ran a ground wire from the ant. mount to the door hinge bolt, then I ran a ground wire from the radio chassis to the cab. I found that the facory CB hookup on the dash is direct battery ground so I left that alone. Thanks a lot for the help!
