Another stupid question. On a big truck, with the antanna mounted on the mirror, would it be better to have the antanna closer to the door or out away form the truck closer to the mirror? I know, I think to much!

Bigjak
What type of antenna? Single or dual? Type of truck?
I have found that a single as far away from the cab on the passenger side worked best for me on a fiberglass truck. This uses the engine as a radiator.
Using duals, I mount them as far apart as possible.
Hint, ground mirror mount to cab frame.
Hope this helps

Bigjak,I drive a big truck also and I,ve always had the best performance from a Wilson 2000 trucker(short shank),9'RG8x mounted as far out on the mirror as possible.Don't try to be cool and lean the antenna out towards the front of the truck. This does not help when going down the road.Been there, done that, don't work.Stepchild

Stepchild,

We angle our antennas forward to avoid bending the stingers, and breaking them off the mounts going under low bridges.

Not to look cool.

We have never noticed a difference between straight up and angled forward, EXCEPT we save money form buying stingers and new mounts.

OTR last 20+ years.

Thats cool 808 but I've never broke a stinger(yet!!!)but bent a few.I've always had trouble with not able to recieve from the rear with it leaned forward like that. Also I run the short shank Wilson 2K so it won't be to tall.I'm with you 8yrs OTR-2yrs owner/operater.

If your truck is metal cab, closer works better. Passenger side works better than driver side for communicating to others on the hwy, but if you get into tree'd (is that a word?!) areas you might have to sacrifice and put it on the driver's side. Getting the load above the cab helps. On daycabs mounting behind the cab seems to work better for all around tx and rx. If you're permanent in the rig a good HEAVY ground wire from the bracket to the frame helps.

I run a single antanna (5 1/2 foot Francis) Have ground wires run to the ant. mount from the hinge. My ant is straight up . Never broke an antanna in 16 years! What ant would be better that a Francis? They are kind of a legend around here!

I do antenna work on big trcks and I have found that in a lot of cases I've had to lean an antenna foward to reduce reflection from the cab of the truck,I haven't heard any complaints about loosing on tx or rx. Also I was wondering if anyone out there is running a Striker antenna and if so what do you think about them.
I rrun one on my four-wheeler and love it.

Hey guys. I am trying to help a friend of mine out on his day truck. After reading this, I see I have to get some answers, but how about if I suggest to him to put a Little Wil or Wilson 500 maganetic mount on top of his truck. I think it is metal cab, not fiberglass. If so, wouldn't this work just as well as dealing with the mirror mount? He pulls full size trailors around Atlanta. Thanks.

Keith,

Even if it is a Metal Cab like the KW's and Pete's it still may not have a Good Ground to the Frame.

A little Wil on the roof will be mostly blocked by his trailer and not give good performance, that is why Driver's use Mirror Mount's and generally run Dual Antenna's.

Trust me with the 1st sargant and I putting in over 100,000 miles a year for many year's in Trucks go with the Mirror Mount's.

We have tried everything there is and was over the year's and Nothing work's better than Good Antenna's, Good Heavy Duty Mount's & Heavy Duty Stud's, Good Coax, and Good Grounding and Power Direct from Batteries.

Do it once and do it right and then you never have to worry about it again.

Hope this help's.
