I missed a lock washer on the first section of a A-99 and it snaped the threads off after a couple of days in the air. So needless to say the first section was junk. So I replaced the whole antenna with an I-Max2000 and made sure those washers were on.

The lock washers keep the sections from coming loose. If they do shake loose, a few things can happen-

1. As the antenna wiggles in the wind, your signal, SWR, and performance will be intermittent

2. The threaded portions will strip and the antenna will mechanically fail

3. The threaded portions will over stress and mechanically fail

4. The sections will eventually separate from the rest of the antenna.

I would suggest that you take the antenna down and install the split washers at your next convenience.
