What would be your guess on the quanity of RF bombarding my body when sitting at my base station transmitting at 1000 + watts using RG8U coax.Just trying to decide if I need to start wearing a lead suit.Have heard that my Dosy meter doesn't have enough sheilding inside.I haven't really thought about it until I heard this.Greenhornet

Well at 1 KW , you are most likely getting some RF taken in to your body , however the frequency is quite low and most likely won't do to much damage , The good news is it has been proven to increase the sperm count dramatically , Be careful when having partner fun....

307,

Well me and my wife have been trying to conceive a little tax deduction of our own. Maybe I should print your post. It would be a good excuse to purchase a little extra power!

It is a fact , those little critters start going ballistic looking for a way out , it sort of energizes them. I read that in a European Magazine. Now if I were you , I would get the wife and yourself of course and sit down in front of the CB. Shoot an hour or two of skip at full power , then jump in the sack. Do this 6 to 8 times a day and that little tax deduction will pay for a BIGGER amp in less than 1 year. Infact you may have two!!!

Exposure to high frequency RF (microwaves, etc.) can cause damage to the human body. Generally the higher the frequency the more of a tendency for it to be damaging. Exposure to high frequency RF has been know to cause cancer, sterility, and eye problems, most commonly cataracts.

Police officers have suffered permanent injuries by keeping radar guns on their laps while turned on.

The human body absorbs different frequencies of RF at different rates. For the most part low frequencys are pretty safe, although they can cause burns if enough power is used. Which is basically how a microwave oven works.

I once heard a story (don't know how true it is, probably isn't) about a CBer that used a RF amplifier out of an aircraft in his van. Big power here folks! The story went, that over time, he lost all the hair on the side of his head that was directly facing the amplifier. Sounds like an old wives tail, but who knows!

For what it's worth, I've noticed among my broadcast radio engineer comrades who have been in the business for over 15 years or so, many are balding, not prematurely, but balding nevertheless.

Among those who are follicularly challenged, I find a higher percentage who have worked long term in broadcast stations with the transmitters on site, while those who do contract work for many different sites, and spend lots of time on the road between sites.

I figure if a 1000w AM stick can light a 40w fluorescent light from 10 ft away, then it can't be too good for your bod. On the other hand, I spent about 9 years, 4-5 hours a day sitting directly across the hall from a AM and FM transmitter and phasor cabinet, and still have plenty o' hair to spare.

I may be in more peril from sitting in front of this computer screen all day..who knows.. the jury is still out....

The reason the amp causes higher fertility is a wives tale.

The most likely cause: The said 'professional CBer' (read that as: jobless, stay at home talk on CB all day momma's boy) sits at home in his pajamas (or nothing at all) which does not place any undue pressure upon or induce higher temperatures into the testicular region. This, of course, reduces the number of tadpoles brutally slautered by excessive heat and shaken baby syndrome inherent to normal modern social activity by the male body such as work.

this might sound crazy but in the R&D lab i worked in on MM wave seeker rockets 22 children were born now the radar that we were using to light up the traget was 100 million watts and 21 of thoes children were girls i had the only boy born with profound austism and retarded he is 18 now and i have found others who worked in high level RF lab's with strange problems with offspring now could this in some way explane the large decline in IQ in thoes who use hi power amps? any ideas?

I've used amps for many years ,but not anything close to 100 million watts. As far as IQ goes I am probably not any dumber now than I was twenty five years ago. Each of my sons was at the top of their class all through high school so I guess it hasn't affected them.I will tell you right now that I feel a whole lot more uncomfortable standing in front of my microwave oven than I do firing up my 1000 watt plus amp.
