I'm running a Cobra 29 LTD Classic into a 3' Firestik antenna (pre-tuned) and have the antenna mounted on a bracket (that's normally used to mount lights on the windshield hinge) and I'm getting good SWR reading on channel 1 (1.3 to 1) but when I switch to channel 40 it goes to about 3+ to 1. I have tried a fiberglass Wilson whip on my mount and still have high SWR's. Would it be better for me to switch mounts and go with a bumper mount and if so how long an antenna would I need to use with it. I am considering using the 3 hole ball mount with a heavy spring and still trying to stay with a fiberglass whip if I can. Thanks for any help |

Well First off , I suggest before you change everything to add a 6 foot jumper in line. It sometimes helps. Let me know. |

Tatoo13 Your antenna is electrically too long. The problem is a 3' antenna doesn't have the bandwidth to handle the full range of the cb freq's. It seems that the guys that build these antennas do a poor job of tuning them and if they are don't have a way to change the physical lenght of the antenna, you're screwed. The only two solutions is a antenna tuner which really cuts the efficency of the antenna, or get a better, longer antenna that can be tuned. Remember the antenna is probably the most important part of your system. A cheap radio with a great antenna will outperform the best radio with a rubber duck antenna. |

tatoo, If the above suggestions don't work, mount a 102" whip on the rear door bumper using a truck mirror mount with a 3/8" lug. Or try the link below and use his mount with almost any antenna. No drilling! http://www.angelfire.com/tx4/jeep1/jeep.html Steve Tech181 Tech181@copperelectronics.com |
