I recently got a couple of used t-ug8 desk mics, and i am having problems with them. Im using these mics on some Cobra 25 radios.
#1 Mic- I noticed that this mic has a squeal in it when I key up. I have checked all the wiring and solder joints. I found one wire out of place according to the schematic. It was the violet wire from the pcb to the volume control. Thinking that would do it, but i was wrong. When I remove the violet wire the squeal goes away and I lose some audio. I can also turn down the dynamic on the radio to stop it from squealing too. Any suggestions on this one would be appreciated.
#2Mic- D-104 T-ug8. This mic was working good till I took it apart. I kept hearing something lose in there and wanted to see what? Well it was the sleeve were the mic head plugs into. Someone had put a little larger screw than needed in there and broke the ceramic plug. I replaced it with a new one and put it all back together and now it squeals. I can also turn down the dynamic control on the radio to stop the squeal, But I can also touch my finger on the #3 terminal which is the one I soldered and the squeal goes away. Any suggestions on this would be helpful.

Chris,
Try this and see what happens.
Check the battery connections and then wrap battery and connectors with electric tape. |

I checked all the connections and everything checked good. Good solder etc. I tried the electrical tape around the battery and the connections and I still have the squeal.
Just curious, What would wrapping the battery do?

Chris,
Some D-104's have a tendency to create a ground loop between the battery and the metal base of the mic. By insulating with tape the battery you break this condition.
That was the cheapest and fastest way to isolate the problem.
What is the volume controll set at? If, too high it will suck in unwanted audio.
What is the location in reference to the speaker?
Just some ideas. |

Hook a wire to one of the screws at the base of the mic to your grounding station.This may be the fix for the mic.Hope this helps..

Thanks for explaining the tape. I can set the volume control on the mike all the way open but then I have to turn down the dynamic on my radio, when I do this the squeal goes away. Im thinking that the Mic and the radio are fighting each other. I can also turn the dynamic all the up but then I have to turn the volume down on the mic.
As far as the speakers go, the mike is about 4' away.
