I just took my Galaxy 88 out of the closet. I haven't used it in 3 or 4 months and its exhibiting some strange behavior. On AM it seems OK but on SSB it doesn't swing as far as it used to. I used to get 35-40 watts with an Ahhhhh! Now I get about 18 and the key will hold at 5 watts for a couple of seconds before it goes all the way back. Sometimes just keying the mic on sideband gives me a 10 watt dead key. ?????? SSB bias ?? which VR ? Or is this a bigger problem ? Thanks

Turn down the mic all the way and tell me , does it still key up a few watts on SSB? It sounds like it is oscillating from the mic circuit and thats what is causing the TX on SSB with no audio.

307 I think you were right. The radio would not do the SSb key while upside down. I sprayed the VR& SSB carrier balance and then worked it back and forth, set it so it showed no key on SSB and it looked like it was cured. I turned it over and it would key again right side up. I tapped the radio and the key fell. SSoooooo right then and there I suspected a bad solder joint or maybe a loose screw on the board mounting it to the radio. I found one screw that would turn a bit and tightened it. No more problem. Its possible the loose screw was making bad contact and creating the oscillation. Got it working again and now it performs like before.

Yup...I know , people argue with me when I tell them to tighten "all 4 screws" that connect the mother board to the chassis. This causes squealing in talk back , oscillations , and all sorts of stuff..
