Hello - I have a Midland 77-285 and a K40 trunk mount on my car. I tuned the antenna and the SWR's are around 1.2 on Ch 1 and 1.1 on 40. A friend wants to sell me his Palamor 450 amp so I hooked it up and the SWR's jumped to 2.1 around the band with the amp on or off. Everybody says the radio and amp sound great. Can the amp make the SWR's go up or is the meter giving me a false reading. People have said to use a longer jumper and see what happens. I do not leave the meter inline so if the SWR's are staying the same then I will just leave it alone. I guess my question is - Can a amp raise the SWR on an antenna or is it just making the meter give a false reading?
THANKS

Take the amplifier COMPLETELY out of line and check the SWR. If it's okay, you probably haven't damaged the antenna....yet. That amplifier is too large for a K40.

If the antenna SWR with JUST the radio and meter in line is still high, it's too late. You have already damaged the input capacitor buried up inside the coil. Odds are that they will honor the warranty, if you can find a stocking dealer.

If you want to run power, a Wilson is a much better choice. They are designed to take it. The K40 is NOT.

If you find the "radio-only" SWR reading is low, find someone who WANTS to run barefoot, and give the K40 to him (her). THEN get a Wilson, or suitable fiberglass antenna, or whatever. This box WILL poof the K40 if you use them together long enough.

67gto,

Tell Me what The Radio Is Doing In Dead Key. If it has a High dead Key That Will change the Swr's. I use A Melaka For A Base when i turn the dead key up the swrs will go up. Keep the radio dead keying like 3 watts and you should have good swr's. If you want to test my theroy hook up a old radio that keys up 3 watts and see what the swr's are odds are they are befor 1.5 on that amp.

I don't mean to be rude but everytime you change the input watts up or down you have to reset the swr meter or it WILL give a false reading,if you set it for 4 watts then flick on an amp you have to reset the meter,it should then show very close to the same reading, that is,of course, you aren't using a k-40.
