I love this radio. Had lots of contacts and have talked locally with no trouble. But since I got the radio, the audio on SSB has always been kinda low. AM and FM are fine. Now with headphones on, I can hear pretty well. But I do have to turn the volume up even then. So can this be fixed without to much trouble? I really love this radio, and this is the only flaw it has. Any help would be great. |

Well, I have had the 4900 back from Tech307 for a few days. And so far, I am very pleased with it. The RX is better, and the SSB audio is much, much better. So far, due to my working till 6 every night, I haven't done any Dxing. Just to much trash at night where I live. But I have some reports with a few locals, and the audio and signal are blowing smoke. I can honestly say Tech307 has the 4900 working better then it did from the factory. The man knows his stuff, and the next time I need work, he'll be the first one I'll send my radio to! Thank you Tech307, it was great having you work on my radio. It's now tha radio i always thought it could/should be. |

307 What did you find that is causing that little glitch in the 4900s that makes the receive audio drop way down like they sometimes do and what did you have to do for the fix? Jeff, kc0gxz. |

I replaced two capacitors near the Audio IC that couples hi frequency noise to chassis (i.e. hiss), I can not remember which ones , this combined was one of the Finals going into oscillation. The oscillation slammed the main board and the coupling caps were open. When this happens the RX goes deaf. I replaced both finals plus the driver. Then I did a factory alignment. 307 |

Slim1 - Nope, the SSB audio is not all the way up. I run the volume around 8 o'clock or so on AM, and I find 9 o'clock is dead on for SSB now. A HUGE improvemnet I would say. And the reason I run it that high on SSB is......well I am not as young as I used to be. And neither are my ears! *G* But it really does work great. I now own one sweet radio, that has great audio on AM and SSB! |

307, Don't want you to give away any trade secrets or anything (uh,well, really I do), but I was wondering if you found the internal power supply to be putting out too much voltage? This seemed to be a problem that was found on these 4900s. I noted voltages of 22+ volts in my 4900, when many components were rated for 16v. I installed a 12v voltage regulator in my 4900 for the SP-1a I put in several years ago, so as to protect the speech processor. Slim1 and I go back to the days of when these radios were first offered for sale at the old EEI, and we both have been trying to get them to live up to their good looks. I have always been plagued with (relatively)low power output (around 20-25 watts max on SSB) from this dual final radio. If you think you can make these radios work to the level of other dual final radios (30-35 watts), please let us know. I would be willing to give this radio one more try. |
