This year I had a local tech super tune my Galaxy 66.He changed the final to a larger one and made many adjustments. When completed the radio had a swing of 45 to 50 watts. Now a friend of mine who is a radio tech for the U.S.Airforce says that the radio is probably doing about 25 watts. He says those extra watts are harmonic ghost watts which look good on the meter , but don't do anything as far as signal leaving the antenna. The radio performs well and everyone likes the way it sounds and I'm happy with it .I'm just curious about the difference in opinion here.

vernonott,

Good day! I bought a Galaxy 99 and did the tuning myself.

Unfortunately I had to buy my radio from that "other" company, only because Copper said they wouldn't have any in for 2 or 3 weeks. I ordered it without ANY of the mods or any tuning done, because I don't want people I don't know fiddling around inside my rigs.

Now, in NO WAY am I a technician of any sort but all I could get it to do was 25 watts. I did only what I was taught to do and the radio sounds good, talks all over the country without any help, and it's screaming loud!

Me thinks the infamous "Turbo Tune" is a bunch of horse puckey.

I think you guys are on to something . In retrospect a new Ford Mustang will not run 800 mph no matter who works on it.I find it amusing to read a J.C. Whitney catalog when they list twenty five seperate performance parts for your car and every part will give you ten to twenty percent increase in power.Oops,we were talking about radios.Sorry about that,I get to ratchet jawing sometimes and lose my concentration.

it maybe harmonics,or just partly. ive never seen the inside of the galaxy66.is it a dual final rig?
if the service tech installed mrf 477s or mrf 497's both hard to get finals nowadays its very possible that its doing this wattage or close to it.try putting a low pass filter in line before the watt meter and see if this made a lot of differance.if so you got alot of harmonics if you didnt change but a watt or so then shes doing you proud.the better quality filter the more acurate your results.

Well if a Galaxy 99 was capable of 45 watts wouldn't the Galaxy people advertise it as such and print it in the specs as a selling feature?

Just my two-cents

Sure , here it is , remove the bottom cover and adjust the following...

VR12...SSB ALC (Crank it up!)
VR13...AM/FM High Power (set for 75% full carrier)
VR14...AM Modulation (Crank it up!)
VR16...AM/FM Low Power (no need to mess with this one unless you want lower dead key)

You to can become a super-tech.

Bullet : The 66 only has one final or at least the tech only replaced one with a larger one.

Thanks 307,
Can I Run my Palamar 225 with the ordered Galaxy 99? And should the radio be tuned differently? Also what is your opinion of the stock mic or a better mic to go with this mobile contraption? Thinking about a Road King 56?
Thanks

Yes you can , you may want to drop the input power down a little bit so it does not over drive it. It may be OK as is , test it out , if it is a little tight sounding , drop the dead key down a little. Road King has GREAT microphones , however the stock GALAXY microphone is GREAT as well.

vernonott,ok 1 final. i dont know your tech but i do know thier are mods out that can give you this power from exports using better transisters.
i did this to a radio i bought from copper's
a mirage 2950.it took alot longer than 5 minutes
for me though,i replaced the finals witch are
the 2sc2312's and put in a pair of mrf 497's.
the 2312 is rated at 18.5 watts per transister
the mrf 497 is rated at 60 watts per transister
the mrf 477 is rated at 40 watts per transister
i also replaced the driver, pre driver with up grades as well.up graded the voltage regulators
af amp re biased the modulation limitor, changed
r-281 to 2.2k ohms and did a npc mod to the rig
and added a speach processor as well.also has a
12 ga power cord feeding the rig .it will do 50
watts peak on a doscy test center, and 26-27 watts rms on my bird 43 watt meter. its not a cheap mod to do on a 2950 the finals alone cost 80 bucks plus tax & shiping not to mention the other transisters replaced, but it does work!
if he rebuilt the tx section with higher grade
transisters,using a 497 final retuned,rebiased,replaced the af amp with a 2sa1012 and replaced 2sb754 with a 2sb817
then id say its a for real 45 watt peak
radio. if its got either a 2sc1969/2sc2312 final
and all other original equipment then he's pulling a EEI on ya.(out in out lying!)
hope this helps 73's bullet

vernonott, ya thats kinda how i look at it as well.but dont get me wrong it takes alot of new parts and alot of money to get one up there!
and to be honest i could have bought a 2970 for what i have invested in this radio altogether
and have much more power! i just wanted to see
how far you could take a 2950.it can be done but
i wont be doing it again on the 2950,at least for
myself anyway.next time i'll do a similar mod to a 2970 instead.(more bang for the buck!)
take care and 73's
