I have a 4 element beam I want to mount. I was thinking of mounting it on my equipment shed. The shed is 30 feet by 60 feet. It is made out of galvanized metal. How high above the shed would I have to mount my beam to avoid interference with the shed? How high would a ground plane have to be above the shed. Thanks

I would go 40 ft, but would bet there is still going to be a radiation pattern off the shed. I wouldnt lose sleep though just extra help! |

I've got an old CB radio antenna book, written by David Hicks for Sams publishing in the 1970s. He shows how, in his words, "to improve the efficiency of a standard ground plane, add another skirt of radials". He shows these new radials the same distance as the driven element below the other radials. If its an 18 ft groundplane, put the new ones 18 ft below the others. I never tried that on a mast, but years ago, I had a shop about 50 ft by 50 ft with a flat metal roof, and I mounted a hygain super pentatrator right in the middle, with the radials about 22' and 9'' about the roof, the same length as the stinger on the antenna. It really performed well, but that was a good antenna anyway, and who's to say, it might have done better at 25 or 30 feet above the roof, but I know it worked well at 22-9, and I didn't try any other heights for comparison. scrapiron |
