Hey guys, just picked up the 5054 dx100 from Copper and it's quite the nice unit!

I do have one issue on the SSB. I do get my 100 watts but I have to yell. On my normal voice I only get about 20 watts. Mic gain all the way up. Sounds OK but could be a little louder.

I was thinking a power mic may help or is their an audio mod? Does Copper have an amplified mic for the Ranger with the up/down buttons?

AM/FM is 50 watts, right on the money.

Thanks in advance for the help, I always get great advice here.

I like compresion amps or processers like the ten-tec # 1551 kit ( cheep ) or the sp-1 processer you must build the tentec into its own case . copper use to carry mikes with compression amps built it and mfj still makes one ( mfj-299 ).....You have a choice of ways to go .... see you on 6.

You really do have to eat that stock mic to get the output up but it doesn't sound right that you are getting that little power with a normal voice on SSB. How much power do you get on AM with an AAAAHHHHH? Should key 40 and swing up over 80 with the stock mic (over 100 with a PEP meter).

My 5054DX 25 watt model did 25 watts SSB easy with the stock mic when I got it. Had to send it back to get the display fixed a few months after I got it. They went all through it and it came back doing over 30 with the stock mic. If I put a mic with compression it would really sing. I think yours will dazzle you when you get your audio problem figured out. I hate to say it but I would try another mic right away to make sure your stock one isn't weak. Then contact Copper or Ranger about adjustment or repair.

Ranger has really good service. I got my RMA the same day I emailed. I shipped it UPS ground to California and it ARRIVED home 3 weeks to the day, better than new. More power, hotter recieve and even tighter on freq.

I would like to compare one of the new 2950DX's with a proffessional alignment (not factory) to my 2510, it'd be interesting to see how much closer they stack up against each other.

Znut, on Am I get a 50 watt deadkey with no swing at all. At first I thought I was on FM but double checked. Actually it back swings a wat or 2.

I'll see if one of the Copper techs responds. Like you said I realy have to eat the mic to get up in the 50 - 60 watt range on ssb. It will hit near 100 with a whistle but no where near with normal talk.

Thanks,

Could be a shorted by-pass or open coupling cap in mike pre-amp or weak modulator or cold solder joint in said circuits.HOLY-COW get 307 he knows everything, mmhmm, yep.Bigbob
