Hello, what is the 7th digit for, and say you are on the external 7 Digit counter and it reads 273850 , should the 7 digit always need to be 0. 2738500 or is 02 01 03 04 ok??? |

I have that many digits on my ICOM706MKIIG. The only time I have ever used it, was when the transmitting station I was hearing (receiving) was way off frequency. I have tuned them in and been able to talk because I'm transmitting on the same way off freq. IE...27.384.83 MHz

Thank you Ca 346, does the 7th digit have to be on 0 or can it be 1 2 3 4 5 when I am talking to be of TX frequency.Or are you ok when talking and on 2738504 Thanks |

If the station (radio operator) you are tuning to is off frequency, you will have to use it to get to whatever "sounds" right. BUT, if you are setting the frequency yourself to transmit on with no one on the air, it should be on zero. For example, Channel 38 LSB is on 27.385 MHz, but alot (ALOT!) of radio's out there are not on frequency. They are transmitting off one way or another. Your best bet is to have the radio aligned by a good tech. That way you know YOURS is always on freq.
Now for the confusing part: Sometimes I purposely tune off frequency to tune up (I use a tuner with the ICOM) then come back to the center frequncy to transmit. I do that so I will not blast people's ears off on the channel I want to use.
Incidentally, I do have a dummy load antenna, but whenever I tune through it, I am off (SWR) when I transmit through the antenna.

here is something to keep in mind that may throw a monkey wrench in all of this. the external type freq counters like the one you mention here are not the most accurate by any means. and the more resolution you have, the more the inaccuracy is noticeable. by resolution, i mean how many digits the freq counter shows. so your 7 digit will show this more than the 6 digits. with the 7 digit counters, it may -show- that the radio is drifting when really it isn't . what is drifting is the timebase in the counter. this drift in the counter, gives the false impression that the radio is drifting.
for the icom, the freq -DISPLAYS- are just that, displays. they are not counters, only displays of where the cpu thinks the radio is at. under perfect alignment and in a radio that is operating perfectly the display and the actual frequency of the radio is in agreement. |

Probably should add the factor that audio is distorted when coming off the side of a beam antenna to really muddle the issue... |

And I check it off and in in the day, I do not let it get hot |
