I have a 72 chevelle wagon. i am putting my superstar 3900 in the vehicle. The car has a water seal plug in the center of the roof. I want to install a antenna there. If someone could give me a suggestion as to antena to use that would handle a little power and work well. |

My suggestion is to get the astatic 1K or 3K. they're very good when mounted on the roofs of vehicles. Pretty darn tough antennas too.

Wildrat,
Wilson makes some of the most broad-banded mobile antennas around. Try the Wilson 1000 or Wilson 5000 roof mounted antennas. Copper carries both models and they have the best price that I've seen on both of them. Check them out here.

p.s. That is a sweet ride you have. I've been in love with 64-72 Chevelles since i was a young kid. Love those wagons too! Always wanted a 65' Chevelle 2 door wagon. Think of all the women you could pile women in one of those!

The beast is in work, I am rewiring the entire car right now. This is why I am putting my gear in it. I am going to paint it flat black, tint the windows and with the antenner on top it will look rather suspicious, I think.
Anyway thanks for the suggestions so far.

The best i done on bandwidth was with the antenna cut for 28 it was 2/1 at 29.6 and 26.9 that takes in cb and 10..... it would be nice to go down to 24.8 heck get 12 meters too ..... with my antenna tuner i go on 12 no problem..... this is with 85in ham stick....2 radios a cb and 10 meter all modes Han stick under $30.Works for me. |

That blown, big block is going to look sweet between the fenders of your Chevelle. I should have known by your name that you were a big block fanatic. Best of luck with your project! Those wagons cetainly are fine machines.

Wildrat,buy a replacement whip for your 5000 cut it to resonate on 25mhz,it is inconvenient but proper,then you'll be in business,or you could go to MFJ and buy a tuner with a roller inductor that will handle 1.5 kilowatts,for about 5 bills,the choice is yours.Bigbob |

A whip for a 5000 would have to be lenghted at 25 MHz, not shortened since it is for intended for cb and 10 meters. Shortening the antenna will tune it for higher frequencies.

There is a long discussion about this very subject already on here. Just go over to the left and do a search of broad banded antennas or Anttron 1700 under keywords.
The end result of the discussion pointed to the Anttron 1700 mobile antenna. It's 6 ft long, 1/2 wave, receives and transmits very good and it is the most broad banded antenna I've ever seen in my life. My radio(note my radio) goes down to 26.000 and I can use the radio there and all the way up to 29.400. Do the search and see what I'm talking about. Oh, and Copper carries this baby now.

The only mobile antenna I am aware of that will cover such a broad range is the Van Ordt 'Pow-R-Stik'. Even then, the SWR will be a little high at the band edges. |
