I am looking at a new mobile antenna that is easy to swap on vehicles etc, ie least amount of hassle. and I have read alot of praise on the Wilson 5000 antenna. So this is my queries, the magnetic mount version is rated at 5000 watts etc, I thought using high power, linear etc, was a HUGE no-go with a mag mount antenna??? So, how do other people get round this? do you need to drill a hole in mag mount and run a seperate grounding wire to car chasis? Also, what is the difference between the mag-mount version and the trrucker version? Does the trucker version have the standard 3/8 mounting thread like other antennas as well? And the main thing, are they really that good? I am using a large coil megatron type antenna now that seems to work really well, ie talk to Australia if I can hear them etc. I want to use the 5000 (whatever version I get) with my KL500amp. I await your replies!! Thanks guys, PS Happy NEW YEAR!!
Cheers
Andrew

I run a Wilson 5000 mag mount with a palomar 500tx. The 500 is a 4 pll and mine does around 400 wats. Nothing but good things to say about it so far!!!

Okay,
I am not getting much response here!!ha ha. I have been reading up on the anttron 1700, they seem really interesting for the price. How do they compare to the wilson 5000? And, what type of mag mount suits them for highway speeds? Again, do I need to run a seperate ground wire when running an amp (KL500), I have heard mag mounts and amps don't mix well at all. I await your knowlwdge!!Thanks guys.
Cheers

That mag-mount not handling power is an old wive's tale! Sure it is not the ideal system, but for those of us who dont want to make holes, they work fine. I have a wilson 5000 that I have run 3000 watts through in my truck using 4 extra batteries, and the antenna held up fine. But if you have no plans on going over 1500 watts or so, I would go with the Wilson 1000, why pay the extra$ if you are not going to exceed the power limit? The 5000 seems to have a little larger coil box, and uses heavier coax than the 1000

Thanks mate, I appreciate your reply. I am still looking at the anttron 1700 as well, are they any better (with a 5" mag mount) than the 5000?? Has anyone tried both?
Cheers

I have probably had a dozen antennas on my mobile everything from the "beer can" coils, all up, and down, except for a big ole whip, the Wilson is your best bet, no gamble there at all.

The folks that mfr'd the 1700 have gone out of business, so finding or replacing the antenna could be a factor.

Sorry 671 but ANTTRON is Still In Business,

Ken & Sammy bought it from Frank and Martha and moved the Business to OK.

Copper Now carries the Anttron Products and the 1700 link is Below.

The ANTTRON 305 Should also be avialiable soon as it has been re-designed and awaiting Production.

ALso you can check the Main Copper Page under Antennas for other Anttron Products.

Correction, Tech 671. Click on catagory search, then antennas-mobile, and it shows that copper still can get the Anttron A-1700 antenna.

Sixtiesmania.......when I changed from a Wilson 5000 mag mount to a Through the roof Wilson 5000 the swrs came down and I gained 1/2 an S unit.
A better ground makes a difference but drilling a hole in the roof of your ride can be traumatic especially with the price of vehicles today.
