I have a galaxy 959 that has been tuned up to talk AM, and it did do a good job until.........
yesterday.
I have been having to unhook this radio and take it home with me after my shift is over.
Well I hooked it up last night, and when I keyed up to talk it did not swing over like it was the day before. Well when I unkeyed the meter swung over just it does if the roger beep is on, and it was not on.
I checked my coax ( it is new ) less than a week old. It was tight in the back of the radio and on the antenna.
When I tried to talk into the mike the SWR warning light came on. Then I switched mikes thinking maybe the new astatic noise cancelling mike was no good so I put my trusty RK-56 back on it and the modulation seemed louder thru the talkback. Then it blew a fuse in the power cord when I tried to talk to someone. Replaced the fuse and it started working agian, but the SWR warning light stays on while the mike is keyed up.
Would something maybe have come lose in the radio and cause this type of thing to happen to it?
Thanks Hornet

Try it on a known good antenna or check it out with an external SWR meter...even though the antenna or cable is new, if the warning light is coming on I would trust it and start with the antenna system.

Johnhenre, the easiest thing to do would be using a pencil soldering iron, just touch the solder spots in the area you pushed down on to make it work.

voltage regulater bolted to chassies have been known too have a cold solder joint right at the board as a GUESS i would probe around them and reflow the solder joint.

Well, I am sure that there is something wrong with the galaxy 959 now for sure.
Because I took it out of my truck and put in my cobra 29 soundtracker and it works perfectly.
So I am sure there is a problem with in the Galaxy 959, as for what I will have to leave this up to the professionals. Now the question is............is who to send this to, and how much would this cost me if I had to ship it somewhere?
P.S. thanks for all of your help

does the awi (antenna warning indicator) in your cobra come on. and you need to check the swr with both radios. let us know what both radios give you for swr on ch's 1 and 40.

85% of radio problems are antenna related. i see this day in and day out. but it is hard to convince someone of this when they put another radio on the same antenna and it does not cut up. they think that if the antenna system is bad then -ANY AND ALL- radios should do the same. that is not the case. one radio may act nuts on a bad antenna system while another radio acts normal on that same antenna system. you already said that the awi is coming on in the galaxy, so this is definitely worth looking into, especially if the swr shows high on the 29 or its awi is coming on.

No the awi does not come on........on the cobra and the atenna had a 1.2 on 1-40ch before and has been nothing changed except when my truck was broken into they cut my coax so I had to replace it......but it worked perfectly for about 4 days then the awi light started coming on in the galaxy and I noticed the swing wasn't LOL swining like it was before this happened, when I added a power mike it made the swing come up some but the awi light got brighter so replaced it with a noise canceling non-powered mike awi light still is on. Then added the cobra 29 and the awi light on the cobra does not come on and the cobra swings up just it always did.
So this is why I think there is something come lose in the galaxy but I might be wrong,LOl I have been known to be wrong before.
Thanks a bunch

sounds like it could be internal to the radio. if so it is somewhere between the final and the antenna jack. you can try resoldering this whole area and see what it does for you.

before you do this, is the length of coax that you are using now the same legth as the one that was cut? if not, you may want to borrow one of the same length from someone else and see what this does.

i just don't want to see you send a radio off to be repaired when the problem may lie in the 85% that i listed above. but with the 29 showing both a good a swr and no lighting of the awi, i'm starting to agree with you that the problem is internal.

I really don't know the length of the coax that was cut, since it was professionally installed.
But what I added was 18'.
I appreciate all your help.
Thanks Hornet

My eagle 2000 had a cold solder joint at the so-239 center socket, intermittant loss of recieve, reheated it and it worked fine after that.
