I have always adjusted my SWR by putting it in the middle of the band, then adjusted it there. I received my W5000 today and they say to adjust it till it's basically the same at 1 and 40. Any thoughts out there?

Either way will work. They "should be the same" for 1 & 40 which means that 20 will be the best. Just remember that if you go out of band to check it there as well. Some mobile antennas are more broadbanded than others.
An easy saying to help with SWR adjustment; If it's high-(SWR), low-(channel), go longer-(lengthen the ant. or adjuster).
