Do you all usually solder the shield thru the small holes in the connector. I always have. Your input will be appreciated.

Wildrat,

YES, Always solder through all four holes. Try to get the flow from one hole to the other as well as just thru the hole.

Hope this helps Iron Mask CEF 100

Before I install one, I always file the shiny silver coating from the holes.....Sure helps the solder flow

I use a larger phillips screwdriver to 'file' the plating off around the holes before installing a PL-259 connector. This really helps the soldering. Flux is vital as is a hot iron. 30 watts irons are not large enough for this job. You will melt the cable before you get enough solder flowing. A 45 watt iron is the bare minimum.

Use silver plated not nickle plated pl-259s,silver has a lower resistance than copper or gold and much lower than nickle and solder flows readily,I use a propane torch for heat on high, takes a little practice at first but easy to master, but be careful or you will wick the solder 3 inches up the braid before you know it.Bigbob
