I just bought a cobra 148 NW ST. Nice looking radio I really dig how the face plate lights up but I am disappointed in the performance. When talking sideband this radio is so off frequency that people have to turn their clarifiers to 3 o'clock so they can hear me. Is this normal operation?

yes it is normal operation for that radio. the depth of the foil has been decreased greatly in this radio. decreased so much that the rf can't sink into the foil and tends to ride all over the radio. this rf gets back into the 8v reg. and causes severe voltage flucuations with modulation peaks in ssb. these voltage fluctuations cause freq. fluctuations. cobra has yet to fix this that i know of , so i have my own fix for this with rf filtering from the gnd of the 8v reg to to the chassis of the radio. this greatly limits the voltage flucuations and freq drifts to a level where you can't notice it with your ear. the alc also has to be intact and functioning.

Thanks for the response. I find it hard to believe that Cobra can sell a radio that operates like that new out of the box.I have 25 year old ssb band mobiles that have been through the war that put this sorry excuse for a radio to shame.

cobra does not build or design their radios. they let other companies bid on this. and now you see what happens when the lowest bidder wins.
