the lincoln uses low level modulation, so it will not have the modulation of a galaxy or rci radio. there is a modification to give it that type of modulation. find c43 and pull one leg off the board. this will greatly increase modulation, but you can't set your carrier higher than 4w(sometimes 3w) or the radio will go into oscillation.

I bought my Lincoln from copper in October with the peak and tune up and it sounds like garbage on am. Don't bother trying any more mics I think this radio was built strictly for ssb and fm. Try a magnum 257, my buddy just bought one from Copper peaked and tuned and this radio no doubt will blow away any president rci,and galaxy as far as modulation.

No doubt the 485 the 257 are fine radios and the lincoln is a fine ssb / fm radio and mine worked just fine on 10 meter am. But to me it does not make much sence to invest in am these days since outside of cb am is rarely used.
