I've owned several of these radios and the things you described seem to be common in all. Does it seem to transmit o.k.?

Try spraying the inside of the volume control with some contact cleaner. That just might cure the sudden "low volume" problem. If this works, but only for a day or two, then replace the volume control with another one of equal (ohms) value.

I would also recomend the same be done with the mode switch but they are now made as sealed units. With age and a lot of use, the internal contacts wear. You could however try replacing the mode control with a new one.
